Its the future, tech is way more advanced, flying cars galore, and humans are confined to dense cities because of extremely dangerous supermutants (think Fallout, but with very futuristic city states) and unexplained "natural" disasters that limit human expansion.

The MC is basically a cultivator under another name with a somewhat original cultivation system, in a world that is your typical futuristic society rather than your normal xianxia fare. His cultivation method was given to him by his father, which was invented based on illegal human experiments done by his father... more>> and grandfather and not widely understood nor practiced (there are allusions to world's number 1 megacorp using his research for "stuff" relating to military and the like). Said cultivation seems to require him to synthesize and consume ridiculously large and lethal doses of psychotropic drugs which directs his school and life choices.

So far (c16) it is fairly slow, and the first 3 chapters were a bit of a slog, but it then got better and I am curious to see where it will go.

edit: c46 read so far and it went good places. <<less

Good stuff. More like a book than a novel.

My summary:

Sci fi world meets cultivation in goodly executed way.

... more>> Focused characters are far from two dimensional. Lenghty explanations that are hard to skip by. Enganging writing and impressive overall thought up chapters.

I was really surprised this is considered a novel, because it really feels like reading a book bit by bit.

The "action" and tropes I often stumbled upon reading in the translated chinese web novels are missing here and it forms a sharp, enjoyable contrast that I experienced reading this work.

What can make you dislike this novel and drop it, is the feeling not connecting with the MC.

He is an anti-social person with questionable morality.

But it's gradually expanded on his backstory and so on. Thought, I am looking forward to how he overcomes his problems and grows up as character.

Edit as of chapter 118.1 :

I am honestly surprised what I expected from this novel to hold true for so long. MC is developing and coming out of his shell by force. Also potential readers don't drop it at the early (3 or 4 arc?) Gear arc. It was a low point for me, because of the long selfless and non action descriptions of MC. But it sure picks up. Awesome story, highly recommended! <<less

The plot is interesting, set in a sort of modern setting though the name doesn't really represent the novel all that well same as the synopsis. So far the character is a bit hard to grasp - setting and family provided but we still don't really know what the main character is like. (Presumably cold, anti-hero MC)

Also modern setting with mutants (though we don't really know anything yet about them).

At first this novel seemed to have potential and the world seems very detailed but this is where the story goes wrong. This story has tons of detail but you the reader is dropped into the middle of it with zero explanation of the plot, characters and the world/ setting. Now this could be forgiven of this was all explained eventually but twenty chapters in I expect more than next to nothing. The only thing we are sure of is the MC's personality which is no personality or a "calm"... more>> personality. I take that as an excuse though because there had been no times where the MC has shown any real emotion. The author is trying to cram as many details as quickly as possible with little ability to portray them. Overall a great waste of time as the fake promise of potential drew me in just enough to waste my time. <<less

I have read all the current tl'ed chapter 29.2 and all I am going to say is that it is truly very good, and I will explain what I mean by 'very good'.

here is the case, most readers, jumped to CN novels from JP LNs which have been, written very descriptively and most of the times, those stories, had proper characterisation, story, plot and the like, the side characters weren't 2 dimensional of bad or good, they had their thoughts. Well this is the case with this novel, you have... more>> a novel which is written quite descriptively (which may seem very difficult to read as you are used to very simple writing in CN), the main character is is very interesting (but we haven't explored him yet fully), he doesnt think in 2 dimensionally, and doesnt act that way either. The same goes for the side characters which are very interesting and have their own ideas, and lives, fears and the like. the story is very early, at the moment, but if you are like me wondering when the 'Stars' aspect would start playing a role, I am unsure but some hints were given in c22. Trying giving it a go, I give the story 4.5 but I will leave it as 4 here because no story is perfect. Have fun reading. <<less

using illegal psychotropic drugs as a cultivation method is a huge turn-off for me (kind of repulsive actually). I've known too many people irl who have self-destructed while using/ abusing to feel comfortable reading about it being shown as a positive catalyst for making someone stronger.

at this point it doesn't matter if the writing is good or bad; I can't get past all the drugs and so can't enjoy the story. I won't rate this since I couldn't get past chapter ten.

This novel has serious pacing problems. I'll give an example so its easy to understand. The main character has a weekend training session and ends up learning an interesting technique. Let me emphasize strongly that he learns ONE move. How many chapters does this take, you ask? Not one chapter, not two chapters, but NINETEEN full length chapters. Absolutely ridiculous padding by anyone's standards. Rating: 4/5 ---> 1/5

Novel follows a 16 year old student in 2096. I won't delve into the details of the worldbuilding, but i'll just say that it's well made, even when compared to most western sci-fi novels I like reading.

Theres large amount of dialogue and analysis from the main characters perspective. Overall a good read, but made me feel like some kind of subtle connotations were lost in translation. Pacing is fine, though it's slower than you might be used to.

Overall 4/5. There are a few imperfections, this is clearly a novel made with lots of effort.

The story is interesting but sometimes a bit difficult to read. That is due to the slow pace and overly passive MC. Part of the story feels like you are reading about what happens with the MC because of external influences and not what the MC does because he has decided to do so. However, it improves in in the later chapters.

Honestly, the story opens up to a good start and makes for a very unique mixture that is rarely seen in Chinese novels Xuanhuan genre but everything else goes wrong, fast, let me give you a simplified idea of how messed up it gets:

  • Mc's thoughts are dull and monotones and his character build up is wholly dependent on what the supporting characters assume him to be. And as such we are left with two contrasting images of what the MC real character is and will the MC's action be vs what would actually happen.
  • The story's progression is pathetically slow, for instance, 10% of the story (500 chapters in total so far) is just dedicated to the f*cking setup of the world. And it is as vague as it can get.
The list goes on but other than these two fatal mistakes the story is bearable. But I genuinely would not recommend wasting time on this.

This started off pretty interesting, but on the whole is a dreadful slog to read through. The first 40 hours in the novel takes 80 chapters to pass, and these are LONG chapters. I can't believe I made it to chapter 280, and I'm regretting the waste of my time to get there.

The whole story is mental battles not physical ones. So there's not much real world action happening, it's a lot of ill defined made up stuff. Yet every vague detail is described at such excruciating length that it's... more>> hard to take. There is a story here that I had an interest in, but the writing style has made sure I'll never come back to this in the future.

One thing to note is this story to date has well over 400 chapters, but this review is the only one past chapter 110. Should have told me something. <<less

It's not bad, it's just the writing style that is annoying as f***. It's not fluid, it lacks clarity and objectivity, it's weird and annoying.

The MC seems ok, the few side characters that I've saw too.

The beginning was interesting and I was curious about the plot, but the writing style just sucks IMHO.

Like, the author tries to create tension all the time with some setbacks he deploys on the story, and that while explaining the some stuff about the world, but not everything, some stuff is explained in vague terms... more>> and euphemisms...

Things don't seem to be done in an orderly way, like foreshadowing>build up>climax>resolution, it feels like a tangled mess, maybe it's because the author has no experience with battle scenes, and things could very well get better in the future, but the beginning really gave me a headache.

I might get back at this in the future, to see if I can go farther than 50 chapters so I can give a more substantial review, but what I can say so far is that this story is not a smooth read (at least IMO). <<less

I've got to say. This was one of the most challenging things to read, and I've read Castle of Black Iron.

I don't mind descriptive novels, I've read many like them. But my complaints are these:

Setting. The setting is good, futuristic modern world, I get that. But it drops you right into the middle without any clue and doesn't even provide much explanations or background.

Characters. They're not '3D' like the reviewers said they were. They're bland and 2D, most of them at least. With others barely making the cut. The rich... more>> kids litterally did so many idiotic things that I've gotta wonder if they're even human. They're s*upider than the usual Cannon Fodder Villain! You'd think other characters are different, but the difference doesn't seem big.

The MC. At first, he seemed like someone who'd be interesting from his interactions with his aunt and sister. But once that amazing scene is over, we're met with tr*sh. He's unsocial because he's apparently 'smart'? He seems like a drug addict, he barely speaks and the times he does it seems so forced. He's more like a puppet than a real person. He's not 3'D.

Which makes things even more bland.

His powers are 'unique' by the other reviewers standards, and I gotta agree. His 'cultivation' is him doing drugs (the psychotic ones), and playing with his soul in a boring and bland way.

The MC doesn't seem smart, only observant. He doesn't seem to have his own will. No motivation, only fueled by a hollow mind. He's not creative. He doesn't think. And his observations and the other characters are more of the author forcing the knowledge then actual knowledge.

Maybe it gets better? I have little hope, The wording is bland and not at all engaging. The scientific descriptions doesn't fit well with the story, and by that I mean it's awfully executed into the writing.

The plot seems steady. But it doesn't make a good introduction for its later parts, so I'm just gonna not read. It's seems like a waste of time. <<less

The protagonist of the story is called Luo Nan, he is a calm youth with high intelligence but a school shooter personality and no drive whatsoever in life.

From what i've read so far the writing is good in my opinion, it isn't overly poetic and it describes the surroundings, happenings and characters of the world well.

I mostly didn't like the story because of how Luo Nan's character is depicted in this story. He is portrayed as a person with no ambitions nor goals so far. It's just such a slog... more>> to read the story when you see this little sh*t being pushed around all the time without the person in question not caring at all about surrounding circumstances or personal goals and character.

I admit you need to be in a good mindset to read this, I wasn't for sure though. I was looking for something entertaining to read with a good main protagonist, which is why this read left me with a bad aftertaste.

Depiction good, protagonist shite. <<less

This story is way too slow paced and boring. It took ~10 chapters to even hint at a plot (seems like a modern cultivation story) and the main character has been having a pointlessly crazy cultivation dream for 3 chapters. I might be wrong about the plot but it shouldn’t take this long for a story to set it up.

A totally unique and intrinsic read. Of the many sci-if genre related novels I have read none are quite like this one, the vibe and very essence of this novel is very unique. While the expepected advancements and growth of strength are present, it is done in a totally unique way through the understanding of the world.

At first you are introduced to a character already breaking norms and using illegal drugs to effectively change his constitution, very much like Galactic dark net, however there isn't much gap in strength and... more>> could be seen as a bit above average. Although he is very much unaverage in his conscience. Analysing every aspect of the world, viewing the world with little filters. Rather than world building, the gaining of strength of the MC is through internal decomposition of the world and through greater understanding of the 'laws' that's govern it. It's intellectually derived when opposed to break throughs in cultivation or magical treasures. It's a very much realist (to an extent) depiction of life through an apocalyptic era within the safe confines of a city, with society built on the ruins of the old and a hidden supernatural undercurrent which lurks within.

(Although that's not to say that the society is not very much different from our own, and although the novel is tagged 'apocalypse' the actual events happened almost a generation ago.) <<less

So just about caught up but wanna take a break. I'll give a short summary.

Story quality:

Well thought out. The theories are well thought out or at least thought upon. It's clear the author has an occupation related to medicine or is just well learned and familiar with plotting and planning.

Pace:

Not well done if anything it being so rushed and the fact that it diverges off the planned course was solely why I was tempted to give this a 3!

Spoiler

The author has everything from Chapters 1 - well 80+ within the span of 5 days! The first 2 days were enough to kill a human but the author realizes this making him sleep for a day or two. But then has him do just as much if not more of a stressful situation the next to same day...

[collapse]

Powering up:

Honestly, while the MC isn't OPhe is steadily getting there. You can see Deux Ex Machina around the corner at every turn. Seriously the author diverges from the story multiple times just to get him OP sooner. It just doesn't seem fast or strong as he uses his abilities differently and it seems that he's week cause there are people way stronger than him constantly showing up.

Character development:

Everyone but the MC seems to have a personality and the Author seems to make him miss a lot of intelligent conversational queues just cause he's an introvert and doesn't know how to communicate such...

I've tested in the extreme upper levels of being an introvert and can tell you one thing, just cause your an introvert doesn't mean you can't express yourself! The things he's supposed to say he avoids cause of the authors need to superimpose the image of a recluse with no social skills onto an intelligent young man who is mostly lost in thought...

The times the MC wants to express himself you can tell the author uses brute Force methods to tone it down or avoid it cause they (the author) doesn't know how to express it.

Overall:

The novel is great and I'm glad I read it. The theory of the power system alone is inspiring for the imagination. But I really think the author should loosen the reins a little. The MC is reaching enlightenment every 5 chapters... And his ability just grows in utility not exactly power. <<less

Started slow and dropped you into the world without any knowledge. Gradually explains things but spens far too much time on these explanations. The main cast has ok character development (not great). MC gets taken by the flow of events for the first 300 chapters after which the story slows down and he changes from being passive to active, while understanding the consequences of his actions.

Overall good sc-fi cultivation story (best i've read atleast). I decided to stop because reading this in mtl wasn't when the story started going slower.

It's a drug trip report in the form of a story. The inexplicable tangents, leaps in logic and incoherent rambling are standard features of such works. It isn't a coincidence that the MC ends up in jail or a hospital so often. There's a tragic, realistic tone to the segments between the bizarre, meandering adventures. For example, at one point the mc's family takes him to a hospital because they are (rightfully) concerned about his mental illness. He immediately tries to get the doctor to sell him drugs.

Of course, even... more>> in this context it really isn't a very good story. <<less
