The tens of thousands of universes have merged. The disintegration of spiritual force led to the momentous collapse of the great Cultivation World, a mighty era that had endured through millions of years of history. In the wake of the large-scale invasion of the Wilderness, the Avalon of Five Elements has become the practitioners’ last stand.

After a thousand years, a lowly youth, who hailed from the Old Territory, toiled as a laborer for three years in the depths of the Wilderness. He then became an exception and obtained the opportunity to enter the Avalon Of Five Elements for further studies.

Bearing beast-like fighting capabilities and driven by the desire to take control of his life, the youth strived for greater strength and power. Little did he know that he would set off a majestic upheaval.

Great novel, probably my favorite. Avalon of the five elements has an amazing plot that isn't repetitive and fits together perfectly, it shows the MC (AI Hui) overcoming difficulties to achieve a high position in the elemental world despite having shitty aptitude, being born into poverty as an orphan, and having no BS cheat-like treasure. The MC is also cunning and doesn't rely on pure strength to overwhelm enemies (usually) and generally isn't a complete ret*rd. The romance in this novel is also also great, very pure and not r*pey... more>> at all like other novels. This novel is NOT a harem, and as such the MC is loyal to one person and isn't creepy, mol*story, or pe*verted in the least. The MC is also not a complete dickwad and knows how to show compassion despite mostly acting for profit, while arguably not a perfect hero, he definitely isn't a villain. The only thing wrong with this novel is the slow release pace. <<less

An amazing novel before the time-skip. It has all the strengths of WoC (World of Cultivators, the author's previous novel) with a lot less buildup. Unfortunately it hasn't materialized in the 300+ chapters after. The author made the secondary antagonist too weak initially, so the ascent to power afterwards may rankle people wrong (although I think the author did provide proper for-shadowing on some reasons why).

Ultimately what puts me off from recommending this novel, however, is how the author is treating the MC. I think at this point the MC... more>> has been on the sideline for basically 5/6's of the novel post time-skip. This has been very frustrating to read. What made WoC great was the author's use of change of perspective to build tension and have things happen in the background unknown the audience. Here, we can go major battles and arcs but the MC has done basically nothing. More than that, it's been 2 steps forward 3 steps back the whole time post time-skip for the MC as well. Not just the MC, but the one of the significant side characters is also sidelined for a long stretch too. I think the big problem is that the author has rushed the powering up of the characters too much and has to come up with different reasons why they are jumping in power.

Right now, I'd hold off on starting this novel until the author has righted the ship. He's proven to be an excellent writer, but right now I'm losing trust in the plot. The author does a really good job in setting things up for later, but he's proven in his previous works he doesn't like to tie them up either and combined with a currently lackluster plot-line for a couple of hundred chapters at this point makes me not able to recommend the novel at this time. <<less

Too much downfall on the mc’s side. After becoming a master he then become crippled. After recovering a monster from ancient times take over his body. Yeah, I know every time there’s a tragic experience it will bare a fruit that will make the MC more powerful but still too much downfall. Like what the f*ck so much tragedy!!!

After 100 chapters I find the story good, but I find the development to be very slow and uninteresting.

20-30 chapters in, I found the series great. But after that there is 80 chapters of build-up (training, encounters) , but there is no suspense at all, including the "training" battles MC had

I expect this to change, I won't doubt Fang Xian (author of WoC) , but some people might be turned away early by this.

This is a pretty humorous story that I have been finding quite funny. The world building is great, and the MC is very likeable.

MC is a badass normal survivor who is allowed into the magic academy by being in the 0.1% of luggage carriers who survive 3 years of working for mages on hunting expeditions (most get in for being noble born or very high natural talent without having to go through the above).

He gets PTSD flashbacks to the fighting and has to stop himself from accidentally killing his fellow... more>> students when that happens. Somehow the author actually makes the above humorous instead of awful.

Aside from that, it is in general a very funny story. And very pleasant. Although the way it ties in with world of cultivation makes me a bit sad <<less

Even though it was discontinued, I dont regret reading it. It was very unique, interesting and full of new ideas for my imagination. If you dont mind the open ending then go for it.
Spoiler

Although it is open ended it finishes with the MC training and quickly becoming stronger every chapter so you can kinda imagine what will happen although it never continues.

I really, really liked this novel at the beginning. Just like World of Cultivation, it had an interesting, developed world. I didn't feel too strongly about the MC one way or another, but he was above average for a web novel.

For the majority of the novel I'd have given it a 4/5, maybe even a 4.5/5. Slow in parts, but with enough interesting ideas and plot lines to make it worth it. It even had the (unrealized) potential to shoot for a 5.

It declined somewhat in my opinion near the... more>> end, but it was still setting up for the possibility of a solid enough conclusion if the author pulled through. I was still ready to give it a 4, if just barely. A 3 at least, if the ending was particularly sub-par.

Then it just ended. Big cliffhanger ending. No resolution. Just done. The author mentioned some health issues, so I hope he gets better and I'm not trying to blame him or anything... but the reason behind the ending doesn't change the fact that this is an incomplete story, with basically zero chance of being completed. <<less

While the novel starts out fairly interesting with its premise, the faults soon keep on piling on.

Spoiler
  • The first "arc" is very uninteresting and takes way too long (battle in the city)
  • MC strays from the "common" path of cultivation just like WoC (World of Cultivation)
  • Establishing of factions and warring them between
    • Just like WoC
    • Soon the entire novel revolves around these factions; plotting, friction etc
  • The MC gets less and less "screentime"
    • MCs faction (A-1, Central Pine Faction etc) is somehow filled with the best people
    • MC also get """injured""" as always in generic novels
    • Novel presents the actions of 20 different interesting to uninteresting characters
      • Chapters chopped into several parts with each characters actions, very boring (subjective)

As someone who painfully finished WoC, the novel Avalon of Five Elements soon feels like the same thing in a different package. We have warring factions and these plethora of different uninteresting characters actions presented, all while the MC is just doing "his thing" somewhere in the backline. MC will surely do something "BIG" when the time is right for maximum generic trope effect. The novel became all I disliked with WoC, hence my taste for this dropped rapidly aswell. Unsure if I will continue reading.

[collapse]

If you enjoy MCs that have a different prespective and always come out on top in the end. Multiple perspectives and factions in a never ending confrontation, you might've found what you are looking for. <<less

I gave this story 2 stars, for the beginning. It was initially entertaining. Slow to develop, slice-of-life, with a lot of world building. Then, it all came crashing down. Apparently the author realized his audience wanted fighting, death, and destruction. Certainly none of what was in the first part of the story. So, the author refocused, and it became simply a war novel. If thats what you're interested in, then you'll love it. If however you are looking for a more light, entertaining read, this is absolutely not... more>> for you. To be honest, after about chapter 180, if you skip to chapter 600, you won't really have missed much. That should tell you all you need to know about the story. <<less

Must you use a whole chapter of bullshiting why you need endurance before every time MC prepare to practice and and "context" aka the wilderness every time MC do or think something? I know Chinese novel is full of filler but holy this is so bad.

This novel has a really great, exciting story. The MC isn't too overpowered, or arrogant, but has the right amount of personality to be interesting. I like his 'relationship" with the other characters too. I wont go into details because a, many peope have already done that, and b, it is really a good read, and you should just check it out.

BUT: It is not finished! So, you should be aware that for 600+ chapters it's a minimum 4, 5 stars, but it's like a 3 if I think about... more>> the first time I found out that it isn't finished. (But after that, if you reread it, it wont suprise you lol) <<less

Avalon of the five elements feels lived in! As we explore further we also go deeper into how the world is constantly changing over time. and it feels believable. It isn't as heavy as jrr Tolkien but way richer and more reasonable than your typical light novel power fantasy.

The characters are compelling and dynamic, all of them. The author did a great job of having the main character be the focus but everyone in the cast contributes to the world building.

the romance was not offputting which is great.

I really recommend... more>> reading it.

I read through the comments and there were several complaints I disagreed with so I thought id balance the scales a bit for those that are relying on the comments.

-The main character being OP for someone who is "not a genius":

-Genius?

In the induction grounds and by extent The Avalon of five elements the only qualifications that matters are your family background and elemental affinity. Both of which the main character is sorely lacking! Hence he is not considered a genius by those that fit those boxes and himself. The aristocracy repressing the meritocracy to anything but their stepping stones is largely why the Avolon of five-element fell, and the era keeps changing too, After Avalon, and the wilderness expecting age...

It is shown The main character is one of the 0.1% of ordinary humans to survivers the wilderness. Proving that he has his own merits. This gets affirmed by everyone who meets him as well.

-OP?

Despite the main characters' diligence, keen mind, and ability to survive through hardship he really isn't all, that special! there is at least one person better than him in every aspect. If anything he might be the most well-rounded and lucky person.

Though they say luck is when opportunity meets with preparation. honestly speaking he doesn't want to save the world or win wars, he wants a quiet life so it's hard to say he is lucky at all. especially when every groundbreaking advancement leaves him almost crippled.

-The main character is a money-grubber and that is not funny

The main character was an orphan born in the slums. He worked for food and a place to stay as a child until the person who took him in was killed by debt collectors. Desperate and starving he signed up for a tour of duty in the wilderness as a labourer, a position that amounts to a su*cide mission! Why? because there were no other opportunities to survive other than that. When he was one of two people in his position to survive out of thousands he gave half his severance pay to the only other survivor so help support the widows and orphans of there fallen comrades....

I think the author did a good job of showing what it's like to live in the bottom rung in a capitalist society. The main character is very practical about getting paid because he has no one to rely on should he fail. Unlike all his rich second generation friends. If anything he is too generous but, that's one of the reasons why they all follow him.

-as for the story being anything other than well put together I just disagree completely!!!!!

the villains are epic intimidating yes but ultimately survivable if not beatable. be it man against man, man against nature, man against himself and man against god they all play a role

It's true that the story never got a proper ending and I hope that that changes but honestly, I just hope the brilliant author is feeling better.

so in conclusion I really liked this story, and I hope you do as well! <<less

This is an unfinished work.

The author basically just stopped at the last chapter, gave a 3 paragraph "everything is peaceful right now"

And then said his health is bad and he's sorry for shitting on his readers.

Seriously. After all the horsesh*t filler he put in all the chapters, especially 700-714... that worthless ending...

Well the author is known for writing good stories at the beginning and in the middle parts of his novels.

Perhaps it’s the pressure from Qidian or his style to end stories before they reach the 1, 000 chapters. Once again this story starts falling short at 600-700.

It’s great as it doesn’t focus only on the main character but the way he brings other characters into the spotlight can annoy the readers when it interrupts the flow of the story.

Ai Hui the main character keeps getting buffed to OP level before... more>> crashing down to tr*sh tier.

It makes no sense how his Sword Embryo was so powerful in the first arc. Especially when he unleashed the full power of it before disbursing should have been at least Grandmaster level but apparently it’s no where near. Otherwise it would not have been able to defeat the hordes of blood beasts. So power levels can be very erratic.

He ascended to the Master level by the Dao of Mastery of Thunder. The power is so strong that most masters are not his match and the antagonists Blood cultivators are weak against Thunder and Lightning. Next moment some small potato enemy faction that is practically irrelevant plants a very rare parasite that nearly killed him but in the end destroyed his cultivation only.

Finally retrieving his Sword Embryo and suddenly he’s attacked by God Blood. Once again wrecking his body again. He survived. Suddenly becoming even more powerful with both Sword Embryo and God Blood.

Now the Demonic God - Scarlet Pupil erupts from the Blood and try to takeover his body. In the later episodes in order to die together, it forced the Demonic God to turn Ai Hui into a True Blood Cultivator becoming a monster in the process.

Finally becoming even more powerful he faced the leader of Mu Shu Association who defeated him. Now it becomes a whole gibberish where readers are not sure what happens next. Ai Hui is inside a dream world/consciousness of the statue/idol. His mortal body is locked up or escaped after the fight? <<less

i like the story but the mood whiplash from the abrupt changes in pace and setting might give you a bit of a headache. The author has forgotten how to transition from one arc to the next. He cuts off one arc right at the dramatic high point and instead of giving us a conclusion to the arc, the next chapter is a time skip. It's on to the next story arc with no warning, leaving the reader blinking their eyes and feeling unsatisfied.

i don't mind the MC, but these... more>> constant power downs are starting to get to me. He's already not stronger than the rest of them and yet every time he gets enlightened or has a power up then in the next few chapters something else happens and he loses it almost as soon as he gets it.
Spoiler

he gets injured, poisoned, or the sword embryo he just got back is shattered again in the next chapter

[collapse]

once or twice is fine but it happens over and over again and it's getting irritating. It's two steps forward then a meter back as far as his progress goes.

also, the multiple points of view are too much. When there are too many POV I can't get attached to (or relate to) any of them. They become nothing more than bloated filler. I tend to skip over the multiple POV because ultimately, I don't care about what everyone else is thinking or bad guys are plotting; I just want to follow the MC's story. It's not too bad in the first arc but once the second war starts it quickly becomes apparent that, sadly, the author really loves multiple POV's. There can be four or five chapters that go by before the MC gets a paragraph or two, then it's back to more POVs for another four or five chapters. is the story worth reading? So far I'd say yes. It's a decent sequel to WoC and I'm hoping that the author gives us more with connecting the old and new as the story moves along. It loses one star because my neck hurts from the whiplash, the contrived power downs, and because it's annoying to have to skip over so many complete chapters because of POVs that don't matter. <<less

If you ask me, the novel is worth reading and interesting not like some other novels where the MC is cold and looks like he is not interested in anything but he see a girl and he becomes completely different person. The MC is pretty funny and the misunderstandings are hillarious after some time. But author always write thanks to the wilderness he can do this and that even when it can be skipped, it gets annoying. But the plot is good and the characters representation is pretty well... more>> done too. And it feels like the author completely forgot about that transformation and there is no talk about it.

This story doesn't read like the Typical Xianxia. It goes beyond the cliche I have found in many of them and that made me end up dropping them (like ATG, MGA, so on). It is much better than undefeated god of war, which I think that, although better than typical xianxia, is also kinda unpolished (it showns that it was an earlier work by this author). I actually find this even better than WoC since I like the side characters more and there are a greater amount of them. The... more>> novel start is quite slow though, so you have to bear through it.

I offer 4 reasons why it is my favorite current novel, the same reasons the prequel (World of Cultivation) is also among my Top 3.

1. The most atractive aspect is that although it has a main character, it shifts perspectives often enough (although it obviously happens more often when there are more characters introduced). This host of "friends" never get left behind like in other novels when the characters "transcend" or move to other "higher-ranked" place where they again are at the bottom. Also, scrap that last cliche either (next point).

2. There's just one world, not universes within universes within an island. Characters that have appeared hundreds of chapters before often make returns, They are not forgotten.

3. The story is complex, tragic, yet has a steady flow of light and comical moments. Yet it avoids several cliches and twists others in an amusing way.

4. Last, but not least: The main character is not OP in the way other Xianxia characters tend to be, and he hasn't the same mindset, he is truly more mature. His clever and quick-witted mind is often what truly distinguishes him from the crowd. Furthermore, the presence of 4 or 5 "friends" help both contrast and supply the traits each of us personally favours. Funnily enough, he also has sort of an obsessive moneylust just like Zuo Mo and Meng Hao (from WoC and ISSTH). <<less

I have really been enjoying this novel but it almost certainly has a lot of flaws. Part of the reason I am giving it a 4/5 star rating though is that the negative points are either not too serious or actually contribute to the novel being enjoyable.

Summary:

The MC is entering the cultivation world from the equivalent of poverty/third-world country after surviving in the equivalent of a warzone. With the primary goal of making life better for himself he ends up being pulled into the center of almost every major event.... more>> The MC gathers a group of people around him while trying to collect enough power to protect himself and ends up becoming a major player in a war between nations.

Pros:

  • Amazing Side Characters: One of the best parts of this novel is that the side characters are fun and interesting, while there are plenty of monolithic or boring characters who show up only a single time, the majority of characters are shown to have interests, motives and also grow along with the story. It makes it so that you want to know more about almost everyone who comes along.
  • World building: The author puts a lot of detail into the novel, explaining a lot of stuff and addressing anything which may be inconsistent. Many of the extra details help to fully flush the world out.
  • Logical power scaling: One of my major problems with cultivation novels is that they seem to have more and more powerful individuals show up even though they should have been around since the beginning, this however is explained and makes sense in this novel. For example in the beginning he is in a town devoted to training newbies, which logically explains why the strongest people are the teachers or officials. When he ends up leaving this area he encounters more powerful individuals all the time and most of them are more powerful than he himself.
  • Interesting Pacing: The pacing of the story is both good and bad. Some chapters are boring and it seems like nothing important is happening. When the pace is high and things are happening though it shines, the fights seem chaotic at times when they are supposed to be and the life and death struggles don’t lose anything even though they take place over several chapters. When the subject is more about intellectual or inventive ideas the pace slows down accordingly which is nice.
Cons:

  • Too many side characters: Even though you have a lot of interesting and amazing characters many of them get confusing or you end up forgetting them after a little while or getting them mixed up with one another. There are too many diamonds that they make one another seem plain.
  • Unneeded or conflicting world building: A lot of the details don’t matter, several times something is explained which can be easily ignored without any impact on the novel. There are also several times when the author seems to change the way the world works, this happens the most in the beginning of each “arc”.
  • Direction is lacking: It often seems as though the author changes his mind about how he wants the story to go, requiring him to change details or information which had previously been imagined.
  • Lacking MC: this is something I have begun to expect from the author of World of Cultivation and Undefeated God of War. While a major improvement over the MC’s of these other novels, the MC of Avalon is hard to relate to or understand most of the time. He is the standard money-grubbing and power hungry individual. The main difference however is this character loses or has set-backs rather than just being all powerful all the time. He also is more interesting and seems to have growth, at the same time it still seems very lacking. While he has the ability to do the majority of things (Swordsmanship, leading and forging) there is an explanation for why he can do those things and it is quickly established he isn’t the best in any category.
  • Cultivation System: The cultivation system is not very interesting and seems less like an integral part of the story rather than just a way to get everyone to do cool things.
Final Notes: The story is enjoyable and entertaining though some chapters are slow and the pacing is horrible. If you enjoyed World of Cultivation you will probably enjoy this novel. The author (Fang Xiang) has the same flaws in this novel as others but there at least seems to be an improvement. <<less

Honestly, too much talk and too little action. I'll change score if this improves. Also, the weird supposedly killing move of hitting an opponent with your back is really dumb. UPDATE

Another problem, cultivation is explained too vaguely. MC jumped from 2palace to 4 in one go and it's not even described how strong he became or what part of him became more powerful (more powerful body? Just energy? Just strength? Just speed?). Path of cultivation here is boring (at least for now) so if you expect profoundness of dao... more>> like in ER-GEN or IET novels, you will be disappointed. <<less
