While this novel is certainly underrated, it isn't by that much.

My verdict of this is a 4.4 or maybe 4.5 if you give extra points for the refreshing, new? and unique? world. (It's not xianxia). Had the author maintained the same quality of volume one though, I would have given this a 4.6 or more.

The first volume was very good. It had a lot of potential, but the quality only went downhill and not improve. Then, there were character (MC) development and great world building. (There still is the latter... more>> though just not as good.) (Not sure about the former.) Now, there are noticeable discrepancies in the MC decisions/actions. How he's developed his military (think of GDN) mindset is also abit unclear/uncalled for. (No I know he went to a military school/camp and further his study at a special corps but still... like.. you need more of a real text of the MC's development) The unexplicable interest in the MC count is still, arguably, one, so that's good news. But the bad news is that if this becomes a harem, there probably would be more.

There's more to be said in the "discrepancies in thr MC's action/decisions, " but I'm too lazy to add spoiler tags so... Anyway, this novel is still one of the better ones, and I think you should at least give the first volume a go. (Though don't be disappointed when the quality drops.)

Side note: the unexplicable interest count would really go up if you count the males, but this isn't that kind of novel so... (thou it can very well go that way, easily, for a fanfic or sth I mean..)

EDIT: OmgOmgOmgOmg before I forget: after volume 3 got going there doesn't seem to be anything bad I notice. Certainly the tone of the novel had changed but it's kind of good?/ok? (like more noticeably CN novel ish? But still not into tropes) This raises my rating to a solid minimum of 4.5 regardless of anything.

Anyway forget that! This really needs a yaoi fanfic. If you like yaoi and have dropped this you really need to read this again till at least now (v3c50) and be tormented like me. (You know it's impossible but you can't help wishing.) Omg I know some CN writers like to use these things to tease us but... <<less

If this novel serialize as anime, it will be popular like hunter x hunter, but as its dark version. The story is similar to Hunter x hunter, but the fighting styles are limited to cultivation and bloodline, limited to guns and close combat only. After finishing the volume 1: after graduate from training camp, you will be hook to read his advanture.

I have to say that due to war environment, s*x is everywhere like animal daily needs. But thank god, our MC is a vampire. So his sight is limited... more>> to only few girls, and so far he only did it once due to drug from military training camp. Furthermore, the author never describe s*x.

The bad thing I dont like with is the fact this MC is so weak in front of ordinary human. Thats it. He seems need to get back to training camp once more, to have a firm attitude to kill. Other than that, everything is good. I notice that MC always taken advantaged by a lot people during hiding his abilities, but the moment he plan and kill, is satisfying. <<less

Dark and realistic if you don't prefer realistic novel with realistic characters and plot than don't read this realistic novel. The novel starts with a boy named qianye coincidentally found in a junkyard than brought to the yellow springs training camp there the MC while suffering from his "scar" (in his chest) the MC tries to survive and starts his journey in becoming the monarch of evernight (that's the title bro) . The MC isn't a human being I think propably but another dark race (maybe a vampire ancestor cause... more>> they are more human like or his powers are sealed who knows) the plot till chapter 12 is progressing realistic enough and I think the author tried to give this novel a dark theme which he succeeded almost perfectly. I think this novel deserves more love than other xianxia /xuanhuan novel even though it is bloody it's really good in my opinion the characters are somewhat realistic and the cultivation system is to my liking while a novel may have a different kind of cultivation system that ultimately is crap. LET'S HOPE OUR MC IS A VAMPIRE WOOOO <<less

Good story!

Not too dark, although the tags certainly are. I'd rate it around The Charm of Soul Pets' darkness level, maybe a bit more. Just don't think too deeply about it.

Pfft, everyone's mentioning the orgy, so I'll talk about that too! Seriously, chill. It's not even detailed (nothing super mature so far, readers only know that s*x is going on, not the details) and it's not even important to the story. Just reinforcing that.

MC's not a wimp either. C'mon, he was five. I also think the author was trying to... more>> stress the 'purity' of the MC in a tr*sh environment. Later on, he is ruthless and bold. Not dumb though. He's a pretty solid MC.

Not a lot of deep character interaction though. People die kinda quickly. All those side characters I liked... RIP.

World is interesting. The ways to fight are cool and the multiple races have interesting customs, abilities, and interactions.

Potential romance, but no solid female lead yet. <<less

Right, obviously this novel isnt one of those standard works. It's pretty dark, brutal and graphic at times. If you don't like that kind of thing, just don't bother reading it. If you see the ratings given it says enough: You either really like it or you hate it.

Now about the actual novel. It's a Western style novel with lots of Western like themes. Vampires, guns, drugs, stream engines.. as opposed to mythical Chinese creatures such as dragons, swords, alchemy or flying cultivators..

In a way the novel is really tough... more>> to get into. Why? Because the author takes the MC through some fases which indirectly outline the tough environment, problems andere struggles he's facing. The entire first volume is aan ruthless, brutal and often pretty dark intro into the world of MEN.

Furthermore, volume 2 is were the actual story kinda starts. However, even thuis volume needs like 8-10 chapters of intro stuff and closings before the MC van finally start his journey.

Personally I find it very thorough written. It could do with a few less outrageous scenes, though at the same time it does immediately filter out those who simply dislike these kind of novels. There is plenty of plot forshadowing, quite some unexpected twists too, that is if you can read past vol1 ofcourse.

There is also lots of room for emotional and mental growth of the MC. Dull MC only following orders? Yes, but if you kept reading... the MC actually gradually starts to change and with his powers also growing stronger he actually is slowly able to influence the world around him with his own morals.

Couple the dark shady stuff with revenge and scheming, multilayered plot and a MC who actually can emotionally grow too, there is just lots of good stuff to read.

Also a big plus for me, there isnt all that much useless filler dialogues. Like dozen reactions each chapters by random bystanders..

A last note about the translation (s), Alyschu and team really bring out quality stuff. Which really brings geest honor to this unique novel making it absolutely worth the read. If you fancy that dark shady stuff..

Now there is also another version available, basically a MTL varying between garage and at times somewhat decent..

I'd personally advice not to read the MTL chapters as it lacks big time in nuances, is riddled with errors and bad phrases.. the usual MTL stuff.. you get the gist but it makes the novel look only half as good compared to a proper translation. <<less

edit: I take back everything positive I ever said about this novel. It's hot garbage and anyone who is a fan of good story and character Development should steer clear of this dogsh*t. Literal years of my life I can never have back defending this shitty novel.

A sh*t novel to read

The things I love about this

- dark themes, cruel decisive characters, fighting nonstop with little bs slice of life

... more>> - have modern elements like gun and stuffs not just sword fight and melee weapon skill s*upid nonsense

The thing I hate:

- new major charactors are 99% girls and in front of them MC often turn soft, helpless or s*upid

- MC grow into a smarter, more likable person as the story progresses but after a while he return to being s*upid and made me frustrate

- there are logics in the plot and how characters act, they all have a brain, plot amor is somewhat thin, but then even when s*upid persons have their s*upid reason to act that s*upid way they still are s*upid acts and made me annoyed so much.

- MC character development mean he is somewhat sh*t in the beginning. Understandable but sometimes irritated to read. He is a miserable kid growing up in a dumpster and then was raised by military so its normal to be brainwashed even tho he is very smart. He raged when there are human co-op with vampire and rebel, when they try their best to drag him down with them when he about to kill them and wonder why can't they show the same effort to deal with dark race, he kill all the dark race and then later on co-op with them, what an irony. Sometimes I find him s*upid even tho I know it very reasonable that he has those kind of thoughts, well probably because author portrays him as a very smart guy (not in politics but beside that he is ok)

- the war part is lame for me, war is a difficult thing to write well so yeah, it is hard to make it good, especially when it is race war

- politic is hella annoying, luckily in this time it is still bearable not to the point make you want to drop the novel. But this world is full of hypocritical things (dark themes so obviously, but I would be fine if MC is a badass ruthless bastard but he is somewhat too nice and dumb for this shit)

- Too many b*tches and the romance part make you feel dumb. The romance part is bad and unlogical (since he live in a world dont have internet, he is still young and never love before so maybe it is reasonable but to me it is s*upid af just slightly more morderate than general chinese novels's romance part).

it had some good points but I just cant endure this after 2 attempts, I'm dropping it now <<less

If you like slow moving main plots and political machinations this is the story for you. It is a western story mixed with eastern terminology and names (mostly). Personally I liked volume 2 the most. I don't know how to change rating it's 3.5/5 for me

A hot-blooded MC, yet sometimes soft-hearted to his peers.

This novel is basically his biography, from how he was thrown away into a dumpster, ... more>>

. He was picked and trained as a soldier, sent into the battlefield as a rookie soldier, and struggle to survive.

There are lot of wall of text, not gonna lie. You can just skip read it if you want, it's not like they have important info or something. Just enjoy this novel as a biography of an abandoned “orphan” <<less

Not the typical chinese novel.

Interesting setting with humans and other « dark races (vampires/demons and such) » in a « steam punkish « style...

it has the root of all chinese novels, easy to read, power ups, etc but in a more complex adventure and a better written world. This author is one of the most talented writer in asia right now.

- the character is very young at first and He evolves... but you have to give him time because the beginning is very fast pace and then... more>> suddenly it « slows » !
this writter style is like this, through the battles and some well detailed adventures / mission you start get to learn more about the MC as the MC himself finds himself

—- overall its great, sometime it drags on some « less » important stuff but its well written, complex, and definitely great ! Worth the read for sure ! <<less

Here to answer one simple question. Is It SHIT?
Yes!

The novel is Incredibly slow and boring.
It loves to skip over the best bits of action, "and then he went to countless missions killing countless people" type of thing.

Overall, an OK novel that takes until volume three to get going, with an interesting setting and factions of enemies. In terms of plot it mostly revolves around the two main factions warring against each other and themselves, while of the MC runs around between the two gathering strength. Also, the mystery of the main character's past.

How some events get set up and how some characters relationships happens are kind of rushed. The author sometimes doesn't build up to these events and just have things happen because the plot demands... more>> it.

Spoiler

My biggest issue with the novel is of course the main character, particularly his attitude of being a vampire. When the topic of him being a vampire is brought up, he always says he's human. While, he continues to use and benefit from his multiple vampire abilities. The MC being a vampire is pretty much the only reason he is still alive and survived to this point, yet he's so dismissive about it. His attitude about this does get better in future chapters, but it's rather annoying at the moment.

[collapse]

The main character also has a very pro-human attitude and kill all vampires/dark races, except when the "good" ones pop up. <<less

I've read the Chinese version and really looking forward to the English version right now :3. This is what I think the best book on earth :3. Except it's super heart breaking, but it's still a super nice book. I kind of hate humans and like vampires now. The two MC are just, perfectly matching but tragic always comes :/. That Song ZiNing is kind of a person I would be pleasured to beat up. Just to conclude, the MC's the best and will always be the best and most... more>> op :D :3 <<less

I’m only writing this for a competition lol, but I’ll just say why I like this novel.

It’s dark, abit of gore in there. Love the way the fight scenes are described. The story isn’t too fast paced and not slow either. The MC isn’t OP like the majority are, he’s had to tough it out sometimes which I enjoy.

I could spout on and on about why I like it, but I guess if you want to see for yourself, take the first step and read the first volume. You won’t... more>> be disappointed. And who knows you’d probably be like the rest of us waiting patiently for the next chapter to drop each day. <<less

Monarch of Evernight is an fantasy steampunk cultivation story the set up is not extremely different from other stories the main character has a revenge factor that started his life of misery, he then gets out of his life as a garbage kid to seek power and that he does.

[collapse]
The story has a slow start and keeps that up with portions of the story being quite slow there isn't a really complicated plot either but the story and characters is good and att times when the plot picks up speed really good which makes the story worth it and earns it a quite good review too.

Personally I Love this Novel, both its ups and downs. It has its slow parts where you get back ground info that helps u to see whats really going on if you pay attention. The story gets dark when you would expect it to, same with the violence, and the gore.

It is most definitely not for any one below 18, and or weak to blood and gore.

I am brazillian, sorry for bad english

Overall its a very good novel. The protagonist is not a motherf*cker or a kid that does everything at his own manner and never dies.

He has good friends that stay and help him all along the story. (He helps them too BTW)

The novel world is pretty big and have a lot of secrets.I am very excited to see what is coming next.

Again, sorry for the bad english and mispronunciation.
