A very good novel to read.

Why?

1. MC is a schemer. And a good one at that, very deep thinker and thirsty for knowledge.

2. Cultivation system is very different from your mainstream xianxia or xuanhuan.
Spoiler

in the end the plot Will move toward the mainstream cultivation steps with a great backstory.

[collapse]

3. World building; Author did a very excellent work at this as well, from politics, intrics, profit based relationship, race intercommunication and many other. Amazing.

4. Don't have repetitive plots, and don't have a shallow character and relationship development.

5. Of course the last reason is because THE STORY IN A WHOLE IS AWESOME.

The minus:

1. The ending feel rushed. And open ending at that, (well I think itu was perfect According to the title.

2. The romance is just so-so. But I think it was ok. (And the girls are lovely too :P)

3. Feel free to add here if you have after reading this novel.

I really hope the author write a story that share the same universe with the first character after ascending, or even write the sequel of this story.

First of all I don't like write reviews cos my english sucks so far xD, but when I saw what Ra3ie1 and qull posted I thought that I had to comment that because of them I constantly avoided that novel until I read a few chapters. I think that they actually read another novel.

From the very early chapters I completly fall in love with story and the background of this world. When reading I had a real fealing of this... more>> world in particular portrayal of races and behaviour of people with which MC interacts. MC is smart and realy know how use brain, not like in some novels when you start thinking if you are that smart or the MC and his enemy are retarted. He has bottom line and use violence when only necessary. History is well written, of course the are plot holes but we should remember that this is novel and author write the story on a regular basis not like normal books or films where plot is completed there always be some flaws.

All in all just try read a few chapters first. <<less

For once a novel with complex stories. Where the other races and characters are not cardboard.

It would be better if there was less of the mad scientist. But, it is done well. In most novels there is an attempt to create a dominating, overpowering protagonist - a grey character. But often, all that happens is that we have a protagonist who kills without thinking - who is just painted flat with one shade of color. Here we actually have a character who is more rounded, and who has different shades.... more>> It is possible to understand why he does what he does, most of the time. It is possible to see how, if we hadn't gone on the journey with the character, and had just encountered him and opposed him, then he would have been a scary villain.

There are some of the general denigration of women so common in the genre. There are promising minor characters that disappear. But otherwise one of the best novels in terms of completeness of vision and execution. <<less

Not a bad novel, a decent read. The translations are pin point no complaint there. Only a few complaints with otherwise a great novel. The flaws are not much but they are huge when you consider them alone.

For example: He got his heartbroken, went to a forest and cried his eyes out. Which is what a typical youngster would do. But the next step is the real problem. What would you do when you found out you couldnt be with the girl you loved? A) get stronger to try and... more>> make her family accept you. B) Let it go and move on. Plenty of beauties in the world. C) Run away with her and live happily ever after. Or D) Change everything in the world.

Yep you guessed it, he took option (D), because his girls clan doesnt allow marriage to commoners he goes and tries to change the fundamental laws of cultivation. ALL BECAUSE OF A SMALL TEENAGE HEARTBREAK.

ok ok that wasnt that bad. But once you see how sophisticated this guy is, and what he does for humanity, you will wonder what an extremely tr*sh reason to change the world. Its like someone falling down on the floor and then they try to develop wings for humans. Just because they fell on the floor and tripped. Sounds like weak motivation yes?

Another flaw is that this man is very selfish in his thinking and everything. Yet he devotes his entire time to researching how to better humanity overall. It doesnt make sense because he is a petty and selfish person. He is no hero his family that took care of him for so long gets dumped in the tr*sh despite them apologising. I understand that though, BUT ITS NOT SOMETHING A HERO OF HUMANITY WOULD DO. Thats a problem I have with the author, its like someone doesnt give his family a cent but goes around the world giving charity to others. His lifestyle and goals are contradictory. I wanna be the strongest in the world, but let me sit down and research how to make the world a better place for random Joe over there.

the mindset of the MC is pin point. None of that overly hypocritical nonsense you see other authors put in their books. However I have a big problem with one of the female leads. She was an enemy for an entire two arcs and repeatedly tried to kill him. But the author who is clearly inexperienced in writing romance made this woman fall in love with him due to petty reasons. She also did that with him so its kinda s*upid how a novel that strays from cliches fell into the literally worst cliche in xuanhuan history. Yes the acceptable r*pes and the guilt tripped MC who falls for the one who he just r*ped. S*upid yes.

Overall its a refreshing read, not the best, but definitely a breath of fresh air from a genre filled with hypocritical and plot armored filled books.

best thing about this novel, is the schemes of the MC are always elaborate. He always prepares properly and makes sure to always have backup. For example there is the group MC is with who he will betray, then they fight with his other enemies. Once that battle wraps up the mc's crew rocks up and cleans the battle. But then this wasnt the mc's real crew but his other pawns who he didnt trust. So after they wrap up the round 2 battle he brings out his true force to clean everything up. Great schemes that dont rely on plot armor <<less

I'll give you a concise interpretation of the story.

Very smart MC, uses deductive reasoning and usually keeps a cool and calm demeanor.

Most things are handled carefully and meticulously. So no s*upid mistakes.

... more>> Characters have traits and not just the friendly ones, so when he kills a guy, he just killed a guy. Not a throw-away young master, though they are in this story.

Now for the bad. Mainly about the story and execution of action scenes.

The gap between power levels aren't rediculous, so one realm isn't throwing hills and the next aren't throwing mountain ranges (though if you want that read ANY of I eat tomatoes novels, fuk matts), skills, timing, planning and application matter more here, if your good enough you can jump realms to fight.

This all sounds good, but the poor or maybe dull execution hampers any emotional evocation the story would prompt from a reader.

Too many info dumps (show don't tell), too much small talk and way too much petty scheming (I just saw the political tag while writing this).

These things when done badly usually leave me feeling stifled and when I'm reading fantasy I don't want that. I want freedom and fun or at least I want them in a more serious story, not something based off of teen angst.

If the author 'showed' his world and characters more this would be less of a chore to read.

Last but not least. Being a 'look at the pretty colors' man myself, some of the fights are long and very, very, very boring. Lacking dept and flare. In fact they might actually be the weakest point of the novel.

My opinion is simple, this sh*t is boring and ignore those people describing this as 'fresh', they are just easily impressed with gimmicks. "Look! He's blind!" "How is that possible!?"

Chapter 151 Review:

I agree with others; this novel is potentially going to be really epic.

MC's smart and strong. He hasn't done anything really s*upid yet. Well, he did have 2-3 pe*verted moments, but he isn't a pe*vert. Quite a calculating and savage dude overall. However, he doesn't enjoy killing senselessly. A bit of inventor/scientist.

... more>> I have no idea who's going to be his significant female other. All the (important) girls seem decent. Also, the MC isn't an absolute loner, yay! He's got buddies~~~

The fighting techniques are cool. The world has an interesting history and setup. Bloodlines are really important. I wonder what bloodline the MC will get? It sorta seems that he might invent his own, haha.

Watching the MC stamp over and blackmail his enemies is really satisfying. The author does it better than most authors. The MC's savageness helps here.

I personally think the 'blind' aspect of the story was done well. Might be pretty unrealistic, but it's written in an worthwhile way.

V4 Chapter 229 (last chapter of V4) :

First, Night Demon FTW. My favorite character so far. Too pure for this world. The side characters in this novel do not disappoint despite there being so many of them.

Hmm, it's still a really good novel, which is pretty unusual since most novels tend to sink in quality as time goes on. Of course, this novel is no exception. Many people might complain about the MC's ethical/moral values since he conducts experiments on other sentient beings, but really, even the author has an author's note responding to these complaints where he deals with them as efficiently as the MC does (Book 3 Chapter 31).

The thing that bothers me the most is the harem tag. First, I don't hate harems. Second, I appreciate a good harem filled with high quality characters. Indeed, MC's harem is quite decent in quality despite 1? being a bit illogical. Then again, all of that can be explained away with: The MC is a highly attractive catch, so why not? The real reason I dislike the harem is: the way the MC interacts with the concept of a harem.

Lemme go on a tangent. Let's discuss the MC. He's gone through a lot of character development. Great example in V3 C157: he actually learns something from his friend after trying out something and not getting the expected results. He's idealistic, but can and most likely will attain these idealistic goals. Sure, he gets plot armor, but his scheming is one of the best I've seen in CN novels. Funnily enough, I find his personality and means to be more suitable for a villain than a hero, despite his dreams of helping the human race. Overall, the novel is quite a hopeful and positive novel. Some moments really bring up the hype and devotion to the human race, which is a nice change from all the nationalism usually found in novels. By the way, the world building is quite developed. There are human countries, and there are countries for other races, but not for all races. Anyways, the MC is quite Machiavellian. He's fond of the ends before the means, but he does value friendship and camaraderie, so he's not an unfeeling robot. To read this novel, one must appreciate a sly MC who thinks and plans before charging. Not that he's incapable of charging forwards bloodthirstily though. The MC can be described as a researcher, scholar, and a mad scientist over a hero, despite also being heroic.

The harem though. It brings out the worst in the MC. The novel has many common CN tropes, but the author manages to subvert them and be quite creative, meaning that this novel isn't always predictable. I didn't predict the harem's circumstances. While I disapprove of the MC's actions in dealing with the concept of a harem, I applaud the author's complexity regarding the MC's harem. Sure, the MC captures the women by being attractive, giving benefits, and generally spending time with them, but it's not an excuse to shove beauties at the MC. The falling in love is fairly realistic, and the creation of the harem is also, despite the MC's actions being quite SCUMMY. I could persuade myself that the MC had the moral highs before the harem formed, but after... eh. He's scum. High quality, but still scum. The most normal thing about this MC is the fact that he's pe*verted. RIP.

Don't worry, the disgusting harem issues only stay around for about less than a book, but it leaves a bad taste, and I bet that many readers dropped the novel due to it. I bet the issues will return and the MC's scummy, pe*verted harem protagonist side will become prevalent again, but the book after the issue is one of the funnest books in the novel. I'm just not looking forward to the girls showing up again.

What I deem as the lowest point of the novel: dubious consent and cheating. If only I could forget about this section of the novel, for the novel would be one of the best CN novels otherwise. It's still a good novel to read if you don't mind MCs who aren't holy, but I still feel that it was unneeded, despite being realistic and managed well by the author.

Spoilers on how he creates his harem, names omitted:

Spoiler

2 confirmed members of the harem. Pure girl (if you read the novel, you'll know who I'm talking about) is also probably confirmed in the future. The relationship with Wife 1 is quite standard, almost similar to a non-harem one. Wife 2 is the homewrecker. She literally opens the MC up to the idea of a harem. Due to *cough* an accident, they frickle-frackle even before Wife 1. MC even later admits he could've held back, but didn't because she was sexy. Although Wife 2 confessed love to the MC, the s*x wasn't 100% lucid, despite, in my opinion, her probably being willing anyways. Afterwards, she even responds the the act in an interesting way, unlike a generic harem member in other dumb CN novels, so props to the author. I have problems with the MC's actions. He already proposed to Wife 1, and was going to marry her, but cheats with Wife 2 because of the accident because he's a h**ny MC. You can debate on this being OOC, but the author has portrayed the MC as a pe*vert from near Chapter 1. RIP.

It gets worse. The MC schemes to marry his wife (done beautifully), but, for the whole time this brilliant arc is going on, doesn't come clean to Wife 1 because it ain't strategic. Bruh. Even better, he comes clean to her in an extremely dramatic moment. They're about to be forcibly separated, and Wife 1 is being devoted and totally willing to marry the MC, when MC pops the secret. Wife 1 is understandably distressed, and reacts in a realistic way, stating that he might love her, but she doesn't necessarily have to love him in the future. The MC becomes even more scummy when, through scheming, forces himself on her, taking advantage of her feelings for him and guilt for hurting him, forcefully marrying her and having s*x with her, making up with her in this way.

I was totally disappointed at the way the author chose to have the MC setup a harem, despite it not being unrealistic. The MC literally muses to himself about increasing his harem: "Now that the possibility of a harem had opened its doors, the pressure in his heart had greatly decreased" (V4 C170). Sheesh. I said he wasn't a pe*vert before, but now he definitely is... RIP

[collapse]

If you need some positivity after reading the spoiler, the MC is working for the better good of the human race. It's honestly quite heartwarming. He's literally building a cultivation path and paving the way for the future. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sequel about the world the MC has created throughout this novel.

Sorry for the super long review (in my defense, it's 2 reviews done by one person, and I binged all the way from C151 to V4's ending so I have a lot to review), and thank you for reading it! If you decide to read the novel, I hope you enjoy the good parts and deal with the bad. P.S.: MC reminds me of Wang Lu from Spirit Blade Mountain in terms of scheming and personality. If you like this book, go check out Wang Lu's story. <<less

Story is good, MC is likable but one thing that bothers me the most is that when MC eyesight is regained how come no one is able to detect it, I mean it is totally impossible to act as blind person cause eyes are sensible to light and pupil will grow or shrink and good functioning eyes will blink and person will do it whether they want it or not but blind person does not need to close their eyelids, and most important part is that normal person eyes will... more>> move left-right and top-bottom and can't be faked for very long time.

I guess author did not research how normal person and blind person behaves and how any average Joe can tell the difference at first glace.

Spoiler

But rest of the story seems fine for now and I like the part where MC actually conduct experiments like evil scientist and not act like typical xianxia characters who don't use brain at all.

Sadly, MC is a simp, he forgets his goals and brain whenever he meets his girl. And if not this girl then he'd simp another, and it seems true as some people in the reviews say something about harem that has yet to happen (though there are hints it will form).

While volume 1 was still ok, volume 2 is already full of plotholes and plot armors. E.g. MC is viewed as a leader for the 40-man team, but he didn't show anything (other than brainlessly saving a girl at the... more>> cost of everything) noteworthy to get that position, author explained it that he's "good at scheming". Most readers would probably not give him any leader role at that time.

His cheat is also so op that the author decides to limit the cheat via s*upid reasons such as "he can be stronger anytime but his goal is research not being powerful". So what we get is a "smart" simp MC having trouble fighting with his friend/ally against a single enemy that has the same cultivation realm as them. And every fight is like that, taking too many chapters. At the beginning it looked like he'd overpower higher cultivation opponents with his tricks and smarts but he struggles all the time.

I won't waste more time on this, people say v3 or v4 is even worse, I can only guess... <<less

Extremely stereotypical cultivation novel. MC is a rich young master even though he hails from a backwater clan in a backwater city, random beggar gives him cheat, none of MC's schemes would work without plot armor, for MC to appear smart everyone else is dumbed down to the extreme, etc. Translation quality is decent. If you want a novel that just follows the same old formula, this is one of them. But apart from that nothing much else stands out.

The author loves paraphrasing, half of those long paragraphs that you see, were most likely paraphrased chapter-by-chapter with some new facts added in to trick your mind. The writing was long-winded with philosophical-babble that projects author's selfish view about how the world should run.

The MC, I don't know how to describe him, the closest word I can think about this guy that he's a hypocrite, not in the characterization but rather by the inconsistencies and that random talk about bottom line, probably author's mind took control and tried to self-insert... more>> himself in to the story, creating this strange secene where the MC suddenly acts heroic, then the next time acts like a licentious bastard, then sometimes he acted ruthless for no reason except someone offending him, naturally, the author will chalk it up to the nature of man is ever changing or something, hmm, well, I guess that's the result of involuntary self insert by the author.

The science, uh, the science?.. It was pretty good demonstration of scientific method at the beginning but quickly devolves to my microscopic eye can see through the truth of the world.

"Haha, haha, My microscopic eye can see that the origin energy flows from the higher gradient to the lower gradient, I can amplify my power by tenfold if I follow its flow!!!"

yeah, the later 'science' was something like that. Even if it wasn't immediately about his eyes, it usually goes like : 100 experimental subjects get injected by x substance, some died and the surviving ones had their x substance detected by MCs eyes moving through their meridian or something, and voila I got a new medicine.

The romance, is kind of cringe, the author probably read some old literature about 'bewitched by beauty' and shits, but what he left with after reading that were the promiscuity that comes from it.

Spoiler

The first 2 seggs, were so terrible,

the 1st one was the the 'i f*cked because of the aphrodisiac' trope,

literally them f*cking for hundreds of time over lust and 'experiments', the second was a r*pe, because MC still doesn't want to lose his original love despite breaking his vow, (uhh, the nature of man is ever changing, author says). I'd have to read the rest of volume if he gets to seggs another wamen for no reason.

[collapse]

Conclusion : All in all, I actually enjoyed the early volume of this novel, the world seems more complex and the MC actually made somewhat uhh.. Realistic scheme (going by author's word, realistic in that world rule). You should read this when you don't have that much time to mull over the thing that you just read, so it stays flawless. <<less

The author has made a tremendous job in world-building, which is spectacular, the story is build upon thousands years of history, full of wars and researches.
Unlike many other novels, the MC fights with his brain. There are no s*upid cliches, or wins resulted from plot armor, "feelings" or memories (remembering promises, etc.).
Similar but unlike Leylin from Warlock of the Magus World, Su Chen, the MC, is a researcher, but does not necessarily pursues power and destruction, but knowledge.
Moreover, to various races with which Su Chen is slightly... more>> biased against due to his identity of human, he might be a devil, but it usually ends up with them benefiting from his research and actions, and some times humans are far more treacherous and evil than the other races.
Su Chen's morals are not nonexistent. He performs human (or harpy/ ravengers/ beast) experiments, but only on his enemies, never actively seeking for research subjects. Furthermore, Su Chen tends to keep his promises, even towards his enemies.
He is blinded during his childhood, letting him see the world as it really is, in both ways. The romance exists, he loves his wives and goes through dangers for them, but performs intelligently, not fighting blindly.
His goal is to make the human race not rely on the power of bloodlines, because "All those who walk on the path of bloodlines will eventually be shackled by the very bloodline itself..." (WOMW), and would be unable to grow more powerful than the beasts they took their bloodline from.
The world of DTPB deserves the title of Desolate Era, of Primordial Era, I love to read the backstory of many historical personages which had an impact upon the world and Su Chen can be considered to be the forefather of all the sect, "modern" cultivation and pills stuff. (I got the filling that the author tries to say that all the other novels are built upon the sect stuff Su Chen established)

Nevertheless, read this. It's good, and better than you think. <<less

I liked this. A fairly intelligent hero, with a personality to him. At times he is kind, but he is often very ruthless to his enemies, as well as very pragmatic. Not entirely uncalled for in a world where only the strong thrive, and death is always lurking.

As time goes by, he does become more humane, but never at the cost of jeopardizing his survival.

Spoiler

There is a harem, such as it is -- two women; and at least one of them has a real problem accepting the other woman, so it's handled realistically. On the whole, this issue has been handled about as well as any Xianxia, and better than almost any other example.

[collapse]

The end becomes less interesting -- it's not bad, but as Su Chen becomes a major leader, and effectively a general, then a king, the narrative becomes less immediate than the struggle of a single underdog. There is also a large infodump near the end which was rather boring.

It's an interesting take on cultivation -- as other have noticed, it basically introduces the "classic" cultivation system as an innovation, with actual development of cultivation as a major theme. So, a lot if times, rather than finding a miraculous technique, or a heaven-defying alchemical recipe, Su Chen actually develops them from first principles, or by combining and adapting less-sophisticated methods, with lots of trial and error.

Almost as a side-effect, the main character and his followers set up what would become the standard template of cultivation worlds: mountain-top sects, sword-flying immortals, different types of disciples with contribution points and entry exams, etc.

Spoiler

At the end, Su Chen even becomes that reclusive patriarch who no longer manages the sect, but focuses on cultivation, and is the strongest cultivator around.

I first became interested into Divine Throne of Primordial Blood with a RWX recommendation, and I'm glad I followed it.

The story is fantasticly written, with great twist and turn, complex plot and various underlying subplot, there is no plot armor that I could see and the main character wins the day through foresight, planning and preparation. Moreover, his successes are not always total and in some cases he has to compromise and he can fail (including in a major endeavour). The only downside of the story is the ending which,... more>> while being good, feels rushed in one (long) final chapter, even with the last twist.

The protagonist, Su Chen, is intelligent, prudent, aware of himself and his emotions and flaw (his arrogance born from his tremendous intellect) but not being blinded by them. His growth is obvious through the story and his rise as the pillar of the changing world does not feel forced. In fact, the special advantage he get at the beginning is used in a "realistic", intelligent way in the whole novel.

The others characters are also well made, with their own developped traits, growth, merits/flaws and for some of them subplots. The MC's two love interest are great characters in their own way, relevant until the end of the story, and while the author does not write the best romance I've seen, at least he tries (by the way, it's a bit R-rated). The core group of friends, subordinates and allies extends slowly but surely and remains a important factor of Su Chen's victories. Even the antagonsits are, for the most part well-made, with their own goals and motivations, sometimes they even ally with the MC in order to get what they want, and for some of them are present in multiple arcs. In fact, there's even one who's a interesting, clever and fresh turn of the otherwise classic "arrogant young master".

The setting does not have the cyclopean scale you often find in the novels of this type, but its depth is impressive, with numerous layers of comprehension we're getting through the protagonist's exploration of its History. I can't say much more without spoiling the various plots.

The power systems are numerous in this story, with pretty much every race having its own. The human's is at first a bllodline based one, but one of the major plot of the novel are the protagonist's efforts into improving and developping it, as well making the cultivation system less dependant on the bloodlines. In fact, the MC being a trailblazer in empowering mankind's culvation system is one of the most interesting point of the story.

The translation is amazingly well done, no typos nor any mistakes I can remember, a normal Wuxiaworld quality translation. Gandalfs_socks does a great job and I hoped he would take on another novel, sadly for us it seems he wants to dedicate himself to his medical studies. So best wishes for him in his field of work.

So, Divine Throne of Primordial Blood is an excellent novel, with a great story, amazing characters, deep setting and a fantastic translation. I could have given it 10, sadly, the good but very rushed ending made the very last part of my reading a bit sour. My final verdict is a 9 out of 10, which I round up to five stars. I highly recommend it, especially if you like a character who win with his brain more than his guts.

P.S: Thanks to Zero Fate for writing this book and gandalfs_socks for translating it. <<less

  • One of the best scheming novels, but sometimes it is also the bad point that the MC won too many times.
  • The plot is also great, but the details are very vague, and
  • Love stories in this novel are not bad for me, not too easy, not too hard.
  • Detail about battle power is very poor and vague.
  • After half of the story start to be boring, there is no future story of the novel for the reader to guess or expect, feel like the story is not going to the climax.
So I stop... more>> here, but honestly, the scheming in this novel is the best and the MC is not an idiot or hero-like character. <<less

Overall a pretty decent novel. I loved that it had a really unique and well thought out scientific approach to cultivation, which I found immensely refreshing. However, this does sort of disappear as the story progresses and the power creep sets in. Eventually it becomes a mostly cultivation novel with the scientific aspects no longer being focused on, but I suppose that this could become repetitive to focus on.

I like this novel... the MC is smart, dilligent, and loves doing research (though too bad there's no AI like WMW).

Pro :

  • Smart MC
  • Nice story plot --> from being blind until defeating god (though I think that the parts when he still blind and when he pretend he still blind is still the most interesting part in this story)
Con :

  • The romance is only so so
  • The cultivation time is soooo damn fast that not make sense in a way (but its Xianxia novel so it's still kinda OK I think)

This book was super interesting until the MC gained his vision back. Him being blind waa only thing that kept me reading. Once the first volume is done, the novel is below average due to the poor romance and poor scene transitions (many times things were skipped over). The plot was decent until it reached the part where he left the academy. After that the novel really started goong downhill. The last two volumes which I didnt try seems to be all somewht battle scenes that are likely similar to... more>> the copy paste reword meta of chinese cultivation novels so if u decide to read, honestly only recommend reading till the end of the first book. <<less

Very good story!

Though it's still ostensibly a cultivation story, it doesn't feel nearly as mired in tropes as so many others out there.

Su Chen, the protagonist, is very intelligent. He's not merely a hero with plot armor, he's a researcher and even a pioneer, going where no one else has ever gone before (which feels more genuine as a path to immortality than merely following in the footsteps of others like most stories).

Much of the story is focused not on constant conflicts with oppressive noble houses with higher cultivation (though... more>> that's not entirely absent either) but on research, learning, infiltrating other races and seeking the elevation of the human race.

The identity of the mysterious figure at the beginning doesn't become truly evident until very far into the story, but it's a good twist.

There's a large amount of world-building, with specific ages, specific dates, empires/kingdoms rising and fallings, momentous events that lay the course for further history, etc. (There is some retconning, unfortunately, but it doesn't detract too much...)

Spoiler

The mention of gods on volume 2, chapter 45, is completely retconned and makes no sense in the later context of the story.

It's implied that the mysterious beggar replaced the arms of a Ravager in volume 6, chapter 15, but that's pretty much totally ignored and it's treated as if he's only ever done such things for humans.

[collapse]

The pacing of the story is quite good, there are numerous timeskips but nothing absolutely insane during the course of the story. As a result, he starts off quite young but has quite a few years behind him. He never really gave off the feeling of a young soul even in the beginning, which was nice (these stories are about cultivating to immortality, I never understand why the protagonist always starts as a brat).

I have no hesitation in giving this a 5/5 score, but on a personal level, I can't say this is quite perfect to my tastes. The romance certainly exists, but it's most definitely secondary. He does indeed get some wives and their relationship is quite good...

Spoiler

Gu Qingluo and Zhu Xianyao both become his wives, but that's it. After the volume where that takes place, the 4th, romance is largely absent (though there is some slight flirting between him and his wives).

There are two women who SHOULD have become his women but never did, Night Demon & Yue Longsha. Both were very obvious choices, but he largely left them to the wayside and afaik hasn't communicated with them in decades by the end of the story. While there are other women he could have gotten with, the forgetting of these two is my biggest annoyance with the series.

Unfortunately, this becomes my biggest criticism of the series. While his instructor, Shi Kaihuang, is correct in that he shouldn't compromise his ultimate goals for women, it still comes across as a little disappointing.

[collapse]

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this series. It's about cultivation but it doesn't feel nearly as limited by the genre as so many others. <<less

This is a novel about plots.

The author always acts as if the MC knows exactly how people are trying to plot against him, when in reality he just randomly reaches a conclusion based on some evidence which then somehow turns out to be true. There could always be a bunch of other conclusions but the MC acts as if there is only one. Quite often the conlusion that he reaches doesnt even make any sense based on the evidence.

The way author making schemes are quite satisfying. Clever & Cunning MC. Good side character developments not like other novels once they show up after some time they disappear. Quite logical human relationships and nature.

I was gonna give 5 stars but after 4th book it became boring for me.

To wrap up its worth my 5 days of reading since because of covid we have to stay at home. I like it but like I said book 4-5-6... more>> became boring for me. <<less
