This novel has a deep plot and solid characters. But the reason I gave a rating of 3 is because the pros and cons outweigh each other.

Pros: 1. The protagonist is cool. With his background as a (former) blind man, his reserved nature and calculative mind and other characterics are quite vivid, natural. Even when he becomes vicious and eccentric at times, you cannot deny his elegance.

2. The drama, though predictable, is subtle. It doesn't fixate on the ugliness like most Chinese novels in similar settings. This gives the book... more>> a certain refinement.

3. The whole of the family arc is treated with creativity. In addition, the boy's struggle is genuine, his triumph is heartfelt. The treatment of various characters and their effect on him is moving.

Cons: 1. The author indulges too much in fictional cultivation jargon, the made up scientific principles and theories and so on. The same is the case with the historical background. There is too much irrelevant background data that one does not care to remember, yet forced to be read.

2. The goal of uplifting the entire mankind happens too suddenly to the protagonist. A selfish fellow so far, he suddenly becomes righteous and the author justifies this change using dialogue, which is in turn very long, repetitive and boring.

3. The plot becomes somewhat routine and numbing from the university arc. The boy overreaches with so many things to research, study, experiment, cultivate and even go hunt and so on. It's a daunting schedule, even to read. Unrealistic when matched with the speed at which he also makes enemies.

Of course there are more pros than this to the book. At least Arc 1 had not been disappointing. But I was genuinely bored since Vol 2. Perhaps I will pick it up again one day, but for now, I'm throwing this one into the freezer. <<less

Can't say it's catastrophic, but it's bad for sure. Good natured, smart, hard working MC get's randomly blinded by beggar saying he is too naive. WTF? Dude, MC is only 12, or smf, years old. What can you expect? What's more, beggar says that MC will get OP eyes after some time. In rl how naive you would have to be to believe that. Another minus is s*upid side chars. How hard can it be to check if he is regaining his eyesight? All of them keeps waving their hands... more>> to check (facepalm). Third thing that annoys me is romance. It is nice idea with blind guy accidentally meeting beautiful girl, but there are almost no interaction. You don't get to know about the girl at all. And most annoying thing is useless info that you get to read in some chapters, for example about history. Author could add some of it then writing with related adventures or smf, but no, he choose it write all in 2 chapters. After 40 chapters you still don't find anything related with those chapters. So why write it so early if nothing will follow it?

All in all, in my opinion not worth your time, unless you don't have what to read anymore. There are at least 15+ better LN. <<less

A novel which is basically the lovechild of xianxia and xuanhuan. I don't think I have ever read a novel that actually blends the two together and it sure made cultivation (at least MC's) rather interesting. Some other things I like about the novel:

  1. MC's character development. As the story progresses, MC grows from a mature-yet-naive young master to a level-headed pioneer. MC's ambiguous moral compass is something I find rather interesting as he does very evil things but ironically sets a (very low) bottom line to his actions to rein himself.
  2. No excessive plot armor which makes it rather refreshing. MC does not always win his fights and in a lot of fights, he had to rely on his wits to survive.
  3. Romance. Contrary to what some reviewers mentioned, the romance and size of harem is actually adequate. I seriously think that adding more members into the harem (there were 2 strong candidates and a few others) would probably do more damage to the novel as the author would then need to add more backstory and character development for the harem members. The author was already struggling to keep the harem members relevant.
  4. MC's cultivation path. Probably the first novel, if not one of the very few, where the MC had to do extensive research to build his cultivation path and advance in cultivation.
  5. Realistic portrayal of society. You won't see nobles getting overturned overnight and peasants pointing magical pitchforks towards the nobility en masse. Political sophistry and schemes were often the answer to navigate around the noble-dominated society.
What I don't like:

  1. Some really interesting characters eventually faded out of the story.
    Spoiler

Basically 90% of his friends and even his besties like Wang Doushan

    [collapse]
  2. Treatment of cultivation stages. Like other novels, the majority of the cultivation levels have stages but the stages later on become nearly irrelevant
  3. Awkward final arc and ending
P.S. You guys should really stop blindly giving likes to 2-3 star reviews that make little sense. For example, a reviewer was barely able to string a sentence and asked questions which were laid out in the open in the novel. Another example would be a reviewer who whined about why author decided to elaborate why MC was not killed or lost and also whined about how the story 'went south' because MC's romantic decisions (kinda funny how he knew all about the romance parts 400+ chapters into the novel).

A fairly great novel. It has its pros and cons. However, in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons.

Pros:

    1. The MC has a nice head on his shoulders. His smart, calculating, ruthless and decisive. I commend him for doing everything he can without relying on plot armor. Although it is there, I dare say I have not read a novel where it barely pops up.
    1. The schemes are also extremely well done. The way he outsmarts his opponents and makes them fight each other and humiliate each... more>> other while being so weak that they don't pay attention to him, only to realize his the true last man standing. That is amazing to read.
        1. The characters are fleshed out from others. This MC has his personality. Tbh he acts exactly how those young masters from reincarnated novels should act. Except he isn't an old man. His master and friends some of them are also well made.
      Cons:

        1. The cultivation system is borderline horrible. You require bloodline of beasts to reach high levels or somethign of the sort, making countless people unable to reach powerful heights because they werent born with green dragon blood or something.
        1. The dreamrealm is ridiculous. It popped out of nowhere conveniently, why didnt he know about it before.
        1. THE ROMANCE IS tr*sh!
          Spoiler

he had a female enemy who happens to be a young beauty. She forced him and kidnapped him and fast forward she fell into his schemes due to him f*cking them all over. She saw him literally grab her by the shoulder and toss her in harms way when an expert tried to kill him. This led to her being saved by her uncle who got seriously injured despite being the most powerful there. He ended up killing them all only to die at the end because of that injury. Now the enmity between Su Chen and this girl should run very deep. He literally caused her brothers and sisters and uncle to die. However he reveals a slight amount of talent when he kidnaps her and then after he is letting her go, she falls in love with him and kisses him. UMMM WTF? Author forced this sooo bad. Like wtf I had to check did that just happen. He literally killed her favorite uncle who mind you SACRIFICED his own life to save her. What does she do a few months after his death? Hop on the c*otch of his indirect killer. WAY TO GO AUTHOR. A great novel ruined by pathetic romance. Oh yeah later he sleeps with her due to aphrodisiac because author isnt the best with romance.

          [collapse]
        1. Oh yea this should be number 1. THERE IS NO PLOT. By plot I mean that MC doesn't have defined goals in life, what does he plan for the future. He got rejected by the girl he loves and said, I want to help humanity because my love transcends any barriers. This is very shallow and inconsistent with the character we are shown. He is shown to be a very selfish and greedy nerd, who will do anything to learn more about obtaining power but doesn't do anything with that power.
        1. He is abit too ruthless to older women. Or I should say non virg*ns. He got a lady beat to death for spreading rumours and he ripped his fathers concubines face and left huge scars because she started the rumour. Although his mother got injured because of this, (who the heck gets physically injured because of rumours anyway. Especially in the cultivation world) so that was kinda unnecessary. I would not have complained about this if other women were treated the same. However, he spares younger women and punishes older. Maybe virg*n lover idk.
Overall a fairly decent read, if you want a break from those tr*sh hating young masters who slowly merge into the person they hate the most. Then you should read this. A lack of overall plot which makes the novel feel like a bunch of amazing side quests stitched together but its still good. Entertaining to say the least, horrible romance tho. <<less

Okay to bad novel plot and logic wise, but I'll leave that to the other reviews. What I took issue with is this huge underlying racism / nationalism theme the author tries to camouflage with the idea of different species. If you have any real knowledge of Racist dogwhistles you'll find them appearing again and again in the novel.

The MC basically spends the latter half of the series committing war crimes, massacring innocent civilians and causing the deaths of millions, but the author basically frames this as good because the... more>> people being killed are from other species and are not humans. They are basically human in all but name though and functionally act as a stand in for other racial groups, countries in the real world.

It's kind of like Martial God Asura in that the MC is a complete monster, but it differs in that we don't focus on his terrible actions, instead they're glossed over as being right and proper and treated as something not worth even considering the moral implications of.

Pretty troubling read, would not recommend. <<less

Spoiler

the r*pe thing.

I get implanting a memory is technically better than raping the guy but it's still a messed up thing to do and having the character justify it just made it seem worse to me. I wouldn't mind a hand wavy thing that explains this away instead of describing him getting broken down mentally. This just made it not a fun read for me.

Volumes 1-3 are pretty great. The MC is a multi-faceted character with brains, a goal, and a bottom line. Not that there weren't problems, as the MC is quite the mad scientist and doesn't mind live dissection and other unpleasant gory things of the sort, but I really liked the characters and world and was really enjoying myself.

Early Volume 4 was super cringy to read. These are the two arcs where the harem/polygamy aspect of the story comes into full play - up until then the MC has been faithful... more>> to just one girl (and honestly she hasn't been that great, she never appears and is always in distress) and romance hasn't been a big part of the plot at all. Make no mistake, MC has only one true love in this story, and that is SCIENCE. :p

This harem is fairly realistic and it's also great that there seem to be women around the MC who aren't in love with him, but my beef is that the MC goes about opening up his backyard really manipulatively. Up until then he has never crossed his own bottom line principles and has mostly been directing his schemes toward enemies. All of a sudden he's selfishly manipulating women who sincerely love and care about him, instead of giving them choices and doing things in an aboveboard manner. It's uncomfortable to read and you kind of want to beat him up because he's suuuch an a**hole.

If you don't like this kind of thing, skip the first 96 chapters of volume 4. You won't miss much, and afterward everyone is fully aware of the harem aspect. A summary of those 96 chapters for anyone who is skipping so you don't miss plot points:
Spoiler

MC fights the Sand Race with the help of Zhu Xianyao and the Immortal Temple. He hooks up with her after and enhances her bloodline to win over her clan. Then he goes to find Gu Qingluo, breaks her engagement and wins over her clan. She is poisoned, her bloodline is awakened to save her life, and she is forced to go to the Desolate Mountain. MC marries and vows to go with her but receives information that his instructor is in trouble.... so not right yet, of course.

[collapse]

Late Volume 4 and on deal with the MC in other race's lands. It's good, but a bit harder of a read compared to Volumes 1-3 because, compared to the first few when cruelties mostly happened to people who deserve it, there is a lot of slaughter of civilians going on and it begins hammering in that the people the MC is fighting against might have been the heroes from a different perspective. <<less

A fun read, far from perfect, but better than a lot of similar novels. The description is a bit misleading, which was disappointing since I was kind of hoping to read about a daredevil-like cultivator.
Spoiler

The blindness is temporary, it last for like maybe 15 chapters, tho he hides his recovery from most people till about the end of the first book.

[collapse]

Good:

    • MC that is legitimately clever and doesn't solve all problem with a head on assault. More than once I was surprised with how a particular situation was resolved.
    • MC with a moral compass so gray that you sometimes find yourselve rooting for the "enemy" and questioning whether the MC is a good person or a psychopath.
Bad

    • Harem Personality Disorder. I like a harem as much as the next guy, but this novel suffers from the same problem many other novels in the genre suffer from, the females seem to loose their personality once they join the harem, they become idiots who's are only present to be amazed by the MC's actions or to serve as the MC's motivation to move the plot forward. Any trace they previously had of being an interesting character seems to be lost along with their v**ginity.
EDIT:

The MC has become too OP, he used to be an underdog who used his smarts to strategically beat his enemies or find the best possible outcome in a tight situation on the fly. Now the MC has a stick that tells him the future, which he abuses, so instead of thinking of a solution he asks the stick, and the few times when he still thinks of a solution himself it is expressed retroactively, like everything bad that happens turns out that it was part of his plan all along somehow, but there is no build up for it, it just one size fits all explanation. On top of that his power is super high right now too, so the MC has become infallible in every aspect and it makes him a less interesting character. I'm hoping it improves, or i'll have to come back to remove a star.

EDIT 2:

It is a slow but steady decline towards the end and I didn't really like the ending.

I was put off at first because of some of the reviews here, but decided to give it a shot after some time.

+ The protagonist. I really like this protagonist. He is mostly immersed in his reasearch and does most of what he does in order to fuel that. While there are a few exceptions, he is mostly consistent and doesn't become a total idiot at points, as is the case in other stories. He has principles he abides by, but he can be outright tyrannical if need be.

+ The... more>> research and races are pretty believable and make sense.

0 The side characters are a mixed bag. Some are really great and consistent, some are there to be there and some are tossed away pretty fast.

0 Some plots are a bit generic and predictable.

- The female side of thing can be pretty bad at times. The polygamic relationships and the way women are portrayed at times jarring. I have however also read much worse in other stories.

Overall this isn't a must read story but it is one of the better ones. <<less

First of all, for those saying that the MC is too lucky to have met the old beggar, you are looking at it the wrong way.

The old beggar had given superpowers to many people on the continent who appear later on and the MC just happens to be the cleverest of them.

Now you will complain that the cleverest of those lucky men coincidentally happens to be the cleverest man on the entire continent too, but that's wrong as well - the cleverest on the continent is Emperor Eternal Night, who... more>> schemes against the MC, traps him and makes him work for him, and even becomes a sort of master to him.

With that out of the way, this novel is pretty similar to Warlock of the Magus World, so if you liked that novel you are probably going to like this too. The MC is clever, psychopathic and obsessed with research and knowledge, but of course not on the same level as Leylin - he falls in love with women and cares about a lot of people too, which creates a lot of weaknesses, unlike Leylin who remains more or less a lone wolf throughout (not even caring too much about his wives and children).

The only drawback of this novel is that too many good characters are completely forgotten. The fatty and the mind controller from Hidden dragon institute who were MC's best friend haven't been mentioned since ages, and I am nearing the end. Yue Longsha was a potential lover but she is nowhere to be found either. Same goes for Indigo and Yinging who the MC found in Winged race territory - several years have passed since they escaped but we don't know what happened to them.

That said, it's a pretty good read for people who like psychological dramas with a lot of scheming, politics and cruelty. <<less

its above average for the genre but it has the same glaring problems as majority of CN, we are introduced into a pretty good world and dozens upon dozens of character that become main stay for V1 to V4 but as the story progress the writer seems to have lost interest and just forgot about these character even after we as readers had to remember their names, some character were completely written off even when they were in every chapter during, even some females side characters were written off completely... more>> from the story, lets not even mention the Protagonist mother because she was completely erased without we ever knowing what happened.

V1 to V3 were fantastic but after that the quality takes a huge dive, V6 is just boring and you would find yourself skipping many chapters, V7 was plainly rushed felt like the writer wanted to end it as soon as possible.

the only thing that made it stand out from the generic tr*sh is that the MC is a Scientist and help humanity grow in terms of Cultivation but that ends quite early because the new system he introduced was so rushed it felt like it did not exist at all.

the Protagonist has many good things going for him, one is that he is very smart and knows how to control his emotion unlike 99.99% of Xianxia Protagonist, even when enemies or rich prince look at his girlfriend with those eyes he does not outright attack them in public or make a huge scene nor does he make enemies like this like usual generic tr*sh, he does not kill or attack people because of insults or s*upidity either.

V1-V3= 4/5 Star

V4= 3 Star

V5-V6= 2 Star

V7= 3 Star <<less

Definitely a weird one in some respects, the story starts good and maintains momentum up until I'd say the 4th volume, then it starts to trail down. By book 5 he's sort of become a generic xianxia/xuanhuan MC and lost a lot of the charm that made the series better in books 1-3.

Pro:

  • MC is a clever schemer, and eventually a mad scientist. He's not a brute force, against all odds kind of MC... until later in the series, where he clearly becomes that while still being a mad scientist.
  • Morally grey, sometimes morally dark grey MC who still possesses quite a bit of good and humanity, but strictly expresses it towards only humanity. Everything that isn't human is fair game to exploit.
  • World building is done very well. It frequently addresses the nobles vs commoners aspect, substantiates it and also directly addresses how difficult of a problem it is to solve.
  • Cultivation elements aren't too complex, one could even say that they're a secondary focus of the MC.
  • The side characters can be quite charming sometimes, until later in the series where they fade away.
Cons:

  • The MC eventually becomes too good at everything. He's still the schemer and mad scientist, but the impact of such is greatly lessened by the fact that he's also insanely strong at every cultivation level he achieves, is still the smartest scientist in the world and can reverse engineer tons of techniques that others simply can't do, has tons of invaluable and unique treasures get schemed into his hands, etc. He just gets to the point where it's hard to feel any modicum of tension anymore.
  • The romance and harem is poorly done, as expected. He spends the first half of the story a strictly one woman man but this woman is hardly part of his life for very large spans of time. He then has another become too attached and they tie the knot by COMPLETE INCIDENCE (seriously, they got pushed over the line from frenemies to lovers by a complete accident), so now he has to take responsibility and expand his roots, etc blah blah you know the deal guys, can't really expect much from a CN harem. Or harems in general.
  • His friends fade away. Another unfortunate problem with cultivation novels is how a lot of side characters just get left behind or slowly disappear into nothingness, and this is no different. Expected, but disappointing.
Overall, it's decent. Solid 3... more>> to 3.5, especially in the first three books.

I liked the concept of the storyline and how it differed from other cultivation stories. The protagonist has to found a new cultivation path for pure humans, in a world where humans with bloodlines of many different beasts flow in them.

The main character is multidimensional. He isn't like your typical meatball head typical "IF HEAVENS GET IN MY WAY, KILL HEAVENS!" - protagonist.

He is portrayed as 'science-y quirky dude', a lovestruck indecisive idiot, ruthless towards most people, yet that is inconsistent also. He seems smart, compared to the others on... more>> the story. Oh yeah the side-characters aren't simple either I guess. There's some romance but thats shitty aswell, I'll explain it later.

OK so honesty, I liked the story most of the time, the world was good, characters mostly good.

Yet I'm so tilted because the dialogue makes it seem like everyone is mentally unstable at some level all the time.

Our main character is like a 40 year old dude at this point and imagine him being portrayed as this smart, calculative, decisive and ruthless scientist person who could be deemed as an antihero.

Then, you see half of his dialogue laughing, joking, crying and being edgy overall. I was so pissed off since this let my expectations down all the time so far, yeah he was a f*cking tampon at the school, yet he hasn't adjusted his mind set yet at all, he is still a f*cking insecure kid inside.

Yeah by the way, this protagonist is portrayed as such a fukin 200iq genius with his wits and plots, yet he wastes so much time in them for sh*t results. His troubles all start from some petty sh*t he could have avoided or handled better.

I'm so tilted this book is alright I guess, it's mostly subjective issues so i'll leave it at 3 stars. <<less

So about a week ago I was wondering what to read and I remembered about that novel that recently got put on Wuxiaworld from voltare and I decided to give it a shot. I was aware of the novel from some time now but the premise in the summary and the reviews put me off, but I decided to give it a shot.

I must say I love the novel's MC. You know how in all the novels we read the author ways say how smart the MC is but then... more>> he goes and do the same s*upid stuff all the time? Well in this novel the MC -Su Chen is actually smart. I could say the way he deals with people is very remicent to Bai Xiachun and Meng Hao, and the way he deals with the world is similar to Leylin. He can be considered both a hero (as he wants to help the human race) and an anti-hero (in the way he does research). He studies, does his research and doesn't show off. He is actually a smart and scheming MC throughout.

Now about the story. I like it a lot! There is a lot of diversity and u generally know about the world from start. It isnt one of those stories and just keeps on going on a higher level whenever the MC levels up. You are told about the general situation of the world and thats how it stays, it expands but the power levels are known there are no ass-pull power levels out of nowhere.

Finally the most annoying thing I find in novels is the Young Master Syndrom and the ancestor "JUNIOR YOU DARE" stuff. There are none of that. I'm not saying there aren't young masters, but that they are dealt with quite well by the author and the MC. The plot is not repetative at all and whenever I feel like I see a troupe the author does something different and its quite refreshing.

All in all, for the past 7 days I have read 5 books thats about 600+ chapters of the novel up to the current translated chapter. I strongly suggest you give it a shot if you are looking for a novel to read. <<less

I'd like to say this novel started off good. Our MC was smart, reserved, proud but not arrogant. There were traces of development of him and his crew and there was even a budding romance. And yet, with time, it all deteriorates. Our MC needs help from other characters to realize obvious mistakes in his plans and romance is kinda shelved for quite long periods of time. His friends become lackeys and forgotten.

I guess my main gripe, besides those above, would be that it becomes boring - too many unnecessary... more>> infodump-like chapters about the world with 0 interesting events and 0 interesting dialogues - so I dropped it.

Started off great, became less than mediocre halfway through - got dropped. <<less

First of all let me get this straight, this is not your typical cultivation novel. How? Typically, the MC will embark on a journey driven by a cause (ressurecting loved ones, simply becoming stronger, finding the truth) then stumbled upon new cultivation world and find an enemy, fight, meet the boss, dire straits, breaktrough, revenge--repeat. Here, you will mostly see the MC explore what is already there but he viewed it from a new perspective which enabled him to achieve more than others. Another point to mention is that there... more>> aren't any fancy and earthshaking-heavenrending battlefight but a more structured and concise one. There won't be any "unique" cultivation breaktrough for the MC but more of utilizing various resources to amplify his power. The author will explain to you how everything happen, how did it get to this point, what trigger this behavior from so thoroughly that you will get sick of it eventually.

Moving on, I shall explain on how the author brings the story alive. Well, like I said previously you wouldn't find any new or uncharted region/world here. Instead, the author will describe each and every region of the existing maps and how they are connected (both through history and events). Sometimes you will find 1 chapter with 0 dialogue--yes, there is only monologue explaining what is currently happening and why it is happening.

Now, here comes my personal opinion on this.

Spoiler

Loved it. I've read countless cultivation novel and the only one that comes close to the storytelling in this one is Warlock of the Magus World (I highly recommend it). The author describe what is happening, the power structure is clear, every action has its impact and you won't find any kind of "random" excuses on why something happened. I love how the author write the story, it is clear, concise, it sticks to its own principle and it is not repetitive. Su Chen himself is a solid protagonist designed to be a highly intellectual person with countless schemes and calculations in his arsenal. He has his own bottom line and he stays true to himself. He is solid and his intelligent doesn't "forcefully" diminish just so that the story can be better. Oh, the harem is good, although some people dislike the fact that he is too focused on his research, well for me thats fine and he doesn't flirts around throwing seed on every women he finds. At the end he only have 2 wives.

Spoiler

Well, one dissapointment for me is that the novel lacks "hotblooded" "heroic" moments which mainly exists in your typical cultivation novel. Other than that I also gets irritated by how the author seems to blabber on his describment of the situation and the region, it just feels like he made a new area on a whim and decided to make a whole new description on it on the spot.

Overall, this is a solid one for me looking for a brand new experience from those 'typical' cultivation novel and if you are a structured or 'by-the-book' person--then this is the one for you. Just in case you get bored early one by the lengthy descriptions, endure it and it will reward you immensely. Guava out. <<less

Don't let the abbysimal cover art and strange name keep you away from this novel. Even the harem tag can be ignored. Few positives:

  • Quality writing - interesting introduction, fleshed out world, fractions with different cultures, etc.;
  • MC that has a brain and acts reasonably;
  • MC has a goal, a pursiut if you will, that starts from childish interest, moves throuth serious moral and political pondering, to lifelong goal;
  • Interesting cultivation and fractional distinction.
Now some negatives:

  • Translator translates some names litaraly and it is a negative for me;
  • The story is going where I absolutely didn't want it to go- MC will have to visit all 4 other races. The author clearly has more potential than that, but I guess everyone gets lazy at some point.
  • Secondary character developement is throun out the window. After pondering I can't think of a character that has changed at all except the MC. After ZTJ I have higher bar for those characters to pass, so I can't leave that out.
Overall - highly reccomended.

The MC isn’t permanently blind. He isn’t blessed with some sort of god like inheritance or inborn power, but instead gets strong with wisdom, which is a really nice change for once.

The MC doesn’t become the strongest of a certain area and move on only to find a different place with stronger people then rinse and repeat. Instead he is surrounded by actual geniuses that grow like him

The only problem I have is that I’ve started to find the story boring but that might just be me

I definitely recommend you... more>> give this a try, especially if you are bored with Story’s that involve the MC getting insanely strong from some s*upid luck and acting like the are invincible <<less

Seeing his lenient and tolerant type attitude that's not so aggressive really makes me angry.. He tries to buy himself a lifeline when ppl tries to kill him??? rlly??? I couldn't help but miss Qin Lie's (from spirit realm) aggressive and straight out refusal personality!!! if it was him I bet I will get to see a very gratifying outcome!! sorry for comparing but still...

another thing about Su Chen is that he doesn't seems to fight for his girl!! giving up so easily!! Aftering reading Great Ruler with Mu Chen..... more>> sigh!! Su Chen's attitude doesn't seems to make me happy!!

also when he's blind I wasn't very convinced that he's blind.

so 3 stars!! <<less
