Upgrade Specialist in Another World

Just as a gamer found an overpowered skill book called ‘Item Upgrade’ in the hottest virtual reality role-playing game on Earth, something happened to the game’s system, causing his soul to leave his body and go to another dimension. Common sense dictates that he would be born anew then become the greatest overlord of this world by making use of his advanced knowledge. Not in this case! He was already dead. Only some fragments of his soul and that skill book managed to get into that dimension and merge with an ordinary common youngster called Bai Yunfei.

This was the enormous Tianhun continent, where humans could be said to have no limits. There was a group of humans here who could cultivate the power of their own souls then control their bodies, the natural elements and even other people’s souls with that power! These special beings were called — soul cultivators. Come witness how the several fragments of the dead inter-dimensional traveler’s soul and that skill book, which was not governed by the laws of this plane, were going to help Bai Yunfei become a legendary soul cultivator and craftsman!

I've finished the book (read the raws) and can only conclude that it's a rare gem. The MC gets strong fast, but that's because his enemies are always on his tails. He never really gets out of danger.
But unlike most authors, where the super strong enemies just pops up right after the MC levels up just to give him an opponent, the strong enemies had been introduced early in the story. (Actually the same author made this mistake in his second book.. He just makes up some uber-enemies just... more>> to give the MC something the do. But in this book, everything is balanced.)
Friends and enemies has a decent intro and ending too. Even his earliest friends will play an important role in the endgame after neglecting their story for hundreds of chapters.
The author will give you a reminder one who a person was though, unlike other authors, who reintroduce a character after 1000 chapters and just expect the reader to remember who that dude was.

The MC's ability plays a very important part and is never neglected. It's power evolves painfully too, making the MC more balanced.

In the end, the MC does gets OP and kills his enemies with ease. This makes the ending seems rushed. <<less

Most review in here only for early chapters I believe, but the things started to get interesting after book 2, MC power development is fast but not too fast like other xianxia. I agree the MC similar to JP novels but he’s not too s*upid and actually used his brain. MC’s friends also not useless and characters from early chapter will play important role later on.

I really enjoy this novel because every arc there’s something going on and there’s no enemies stronger than him that will pop out randomly and... more>> die few chapters later. And who doesn’t like a brick that have bankai like power <<less

So here's my take.

PROS:
Best opening I've seen in a while. Definitely worth a read through the bandit arc. It's extremely fresh and fun to read.

Cons:

After the bandit arc, the thing you'll like most about the MC goes away. His actions completely contradict his previous goals. And the weirdest thing is he's totally OK with doing that. In fact, he planned to do that for some reason... It's really lame.

Spoiler

So here's what happened. At the beginning with the bandits, he made sure to spare no one so that his identity isn't leaked to the school behind the bandits. (The martial arts school bankrolls bandits to pillage and r*pe).

Then he tells himself to do that same with the young master Zhang that is the object of his revenge... But for some reason, he spares the dudes guards that he knocked out previously.

Then a few chapters later he starts discussing how he had planned when he would flee from where because he spared the guards. He thought they'd be after him in ten days when it took seventeen... But that's ridiculous because he shouldn't have planned to get caught in the first place!

Then after he barely escapes from Daddy Zhang whose a Sprite (one whole level above him) he goes to another city where that school who previously had lost him had planted a scene to cause him to fall in love with a girl so they can figure out how he modified his armaments...

But this girl stuff is super forced. Like the MC is all "There's a special feeling here"

Then he stays a day to flirt with her when he's fleeing for his life...

So yeah. It just gets worse from here... When he realized that the girl is a setup he goes alone to the restaurant to confront the school (the girl and the elder whose plan this was...) The absolute moronic thing is that the elder is a freaking sprite (a whole level above him AGAIN but stronger than the last dude).

[collapse]

So to sum up for those who don't want to read the spoiler:
His decision making after the bandit arc is tr*sh. His priorities are tr*sh. His sense of direction is tr*sh. He wants to become stronger simply to be stronger but advertising that you are basically a mu*derer when you don't need to is really weird behavior!

On top of this, the author forces scenarios that frankly can't happen. I know the world seems small guys. But have you ever tried to perform a manhunt on someone in modern times with satellite tracking? There's a reason criminals are often at large for days... I know it LOOKS easy in the Lord of The Rings but how easy is it really when your opponent takes a step every 20 meters as they do in this story... This is actually my largest beef in wuxia novels. Whenever a manhunt happens the writer treats it as if a thousand miles of the backcountry is easy to search... If you dig out our old friend math you'll find that area is always far larger a number than a straight line.. To reasonably search all that territory is unlikely. <<less

This story amazingly combines cultivation with video game stats. I really like the occasional references to plot devices, and the story uses many cliches in an interesting way. With good world development, amusing allusions, and a not-always-right MC, USAW comes together as an excellently entertaining read.

This MC is simply too idiotic, guillable, borderline ret*rded.

And no, don't be fooled in thinking "he'll mature more as the story progresses"... he's only getting increasingly s*upid with every passing chapter.

I can't bear with reading this. It's so irritating.

Before starting to read this I was wondering why does it have such a low rating but now that I see what an imbecile the MC is, I'm no longer suprised.

One of the best web novels I am reading at the moment.

The Bad:

  • The early chapters are not the greatest. It gets better later I personally think.
  • Could do with a bit more character building for some of the side characters.
  • Can be a bit slow at times.
The Good:

  • Great MC. It is nice to have a person that is actually sensible and reasonable as an MC in wuxia novels. Not just some idiot that goes around hiding his power as a poor excuse to let others escalate a situation until it ends in mu*der.
  • Cool premise, the overall context and the MCs cheat is pretty cool. It is not totally overpowered like some other MCs cheats.
  • Good world building. It feels like the author put some thought into planning his world not just randomly making stuff up as he goes.
  • The novel can also be quite funny at times, at least I think so.
Allover I would recommend this novel mostly on the strength of the MC. He is likeable which is pretty rare in wuxia I feel. He doesn't always just look for an excuse to commit mu*der even though it does happen of course.

If you like an obnoxiously moronic MC saved only by his blatant plot armor and repeated pointless conflicts caused by his s*upidity, you will like this novel.

It is a shame because the premise has real promise, but the novel is ruined by the protagonist's inability to pull his head out of his ass.

Translation is clunky and reads flat with little emotion. Plot is painfully predictable xianxia/shounen tropes. So many plot holes with plot armor set to max.

MC magically gets gamer upgrade cheat that allows him to power cultivate. Fine, thats pretty standard for the genre. But then he promptly ignores it but still somehow jumps stages that should take months to years in a few days. And is able to kill 5 cultivaters way above his level and hundreds of bandits with minimal effort. MC has no training yet is somehow able... more>> to adequately use all sorts of weapons.

MC's personality is also frustratingly naive and inconsistent for the sake of forcing plot points. One moment hes a clever tactician (which also makes little sense as an uneducated, inexperienced commoner) than suddenly an incredibly dense fool. Silly things happen that should not happen just to force plot.

He talks about long term plans but then instigates them way to soon resulting in dozens of chapters of forced conflict. He shares secrets he knows he shouldn't, to characters that are suspect, and then freaks when sh*t happens -__-

It reads like a jp web novelist trying their hand at a xianxia. <<less

Protagonist is too s*upid.

If an author has to dumb down the protagonist because they can't come up with better scenarios (or smarter villains) then they should take a step back and re-think the things in their story a little.

What could be said about the story plot?

A standard powerless MC get a special skill to upgrade his Equipment like an rpg character. After a casual rich boy villian plot he will awaken the special power in the story universe in his body which is needed to cultivate special martial arts.

There is a lvl system for the cultivation and the Equipment. There are element attributes like fire, water,... which will be connected to the cultivation and equipment system. Of cause there are material arts schools with different styles which are... more>> basicly connected to the elements. There are powerful beasts/pets which will be used by the martial artists as friends or as enemys.

I have to tell you that I am in love with this kind of rpg story telling style like this novel. So I overlooked for a very long time (c 1000) the bad story telling and charakter development of the author. But after a lot of skipped chapters in every book (basicly the boring and reapeted fighting scenes) I droped the novel after book 7. Why?

The author has very good ideas for story plots but skipped them realy fast or forgott about them only to get as fast as possibel to endless fighting scenes... No story development.. Time after time he/she/it remebers that there was a cliffhanger plot writes 1-2 chapters about the topic and skipps to the next fighting scene. The villians are basicly the same ones (factions/schools) and get every time a horribal ass beating by the MC and bis friends. Of cause the villians are every time outnumbered, more powerfull or both only to let the MC shine like the sun...

the novel has basicly only story cliffhangers, no ideas or logical developments to solve them and a realy bad and fast writing style to geht as fast as possibel into fighting scenes. <<less

Three things that turned me off from reading this novel right from the beginning.

Strike 1: the whole debacle with Liu Meng, especially when he finds out her scheme and even walks into the tiger's den knowing he would be forced to flee for his life since he wasn't strong enough. Miscalculates and gets injured when there was no point.

Strike 2: gets manipulated by Green Willow school leader to forcibly accept a "sworn sister" and even feels thankful towards them after? He sends Hong Yin to inform them to come and... more>> help him out when visiting Liu Meng's "dad" and acts super grateful lol. They barely help him and author makes sure to have MC express his gratitude and how he will pay them back.

Strike 3: gets his ring stolen by a thief who can shape shift and disguise himself. Lets him off cuz he reminded him of his friend, but not before beating him up and humiliating him and then telling him his name so that he can later go and cause trouble for him. Thief who stole his ring sexually harasses some girl and her bodyguard using his face and then when MC meets them he gets attacked.

MC changed so much from when he went and killed all those bandits early on. He may be really naive at times, but he was also very calculating. You would think him being dumb enough to knock out guards in the Zhang manor and reveal his identity knowing people would find out and were even listening he would learn his lesson but apparently not. <<less

The MC is not a mass mu*derer. He’s kindhearted and doesn’t have a harem. The only bad thing about this series is the cliche where the MC just did the impossible by reaching a high level at a young age that no one had ever done before, only to go to the next area where there are millions of people like him.

PLOT ARMOR to the max. It is a "just accept it is read". I have a lot of questions of how and why he suddenly became like that of a person in terms of his personality, way of thinking. It seems like he can become someone with a switch. The novel lacked important explanation on how the MC transition to his current persona. It would have been better if it says that the integration of the soul made several changes in him, like how he became "smart" in dealing with... more>> his new found ability. <<less

It's nothing breath-taking like the top xianxia that you can find on this site but it's non controversial, the MC isn't particularly ruthless or a "psychopath". He slowly builds connection and rapidly advances in the world of cultivation.

If the beginning is not as good as you would expect it from a WW novel, it's a very good build up that predicts a good future plot.

I've read quite a few xianxia at this point (at least 12k+ chapters in total) and this was one of the best ones that I keep coming back to and rereading (3 times now since I first read it abt a year ago), because of the MC.

Most xianxia MCs are written as unyielding blockheads who want to literally mu*der everyone who looks at them, and seduce and marry every jade beauty on the way, that's fine and all but not very relatable. Bai Yunfei on the other hand is a... more>> peasant worker who somehow gets a "gamer's" soul infused in him along with the "Upgrade Technique." He doesn't instantly understand how this random skill works and abuse it to become the strongest being in all of creation, he has no f*cking clue what's going on and repeatedly almost gets killed as he tries to figure sh*t out.

Another thing is the power creep isn't egregiously high (punches can destroy mountains by the end) lifespan and time scale isn't blow out of proportion (main story takes about 10-12 years, max lifespan is 400ish) and the cultivation is "balanced" mostly. The "he's only an X layer cultivator how could he beat an X+1 layer cultivator" only shows up a few times in total as opposed to sometimes several times per chapter as I've seen in some other xianxia (I'm looking at you Huang Xiaolong) MC can only fight slightly above his rank, mostly explained by the use of soul armaments and he isn't the only one who can fight above his level. Eventually he obtains a power-up that lets him fight higher but that isn't until mid-late in the novel itself.

Last major good point is that most of the novel is focused on MC getting stronger and detailed fight scenes. There is only one wife (xianxia without harem? What is this?) and they don't officially get together until pretty late, although you can see some signs of the romance earlier.

Spoiler

Plus what other xianxia does the MC dual wield magic f*cking Desert Eagles?

While there are many issues with this novel, the one thing that irks me the most, and the reason I decided to drop it is the fact that the author shamelessly makes the enemies scale to the power level of the MC instead of trying to think of new and interesting settings. To the point that the MC can break into a sect and lay waste to it killing scores of disciple with impunity until the headmaster himself has to take action, only for that same sect latter on to... more>> have several figures on par with the headmaster at the time popup out of nowhere. <<less

if you are looking for an arrogant MC that loves showing off his power and curb stomps everyone without setbacks while bragging about "the great me" then this is not the novel for you. The MC remains about a half step ahead or behind his peers throughout most of the novel and he loses/ retreats more than once. His cheat has a lot of limitations, he's left to figure everything out without help and it's not like he can just upgrade equip infinitely, in over 1000ch the highest he's upgraded was 14. He's moderate for a cultivation MC and while he's neither a genius nor a moron, he has moments of both. He also suffers from bouts of Thrice Reckless Disease which causes occasional lapses in judgment.

Spoiler

also, what happened with him being part of the fate sect? He passed on the cultivation technique but kept the ring and the spear and everything else so I thought he was still a member of the fate sect. He even gets help from his seniors from the fate sect from time to time. Did joining the crafting school automatically negate his being a part of the fate sect? I wish the author would have explained that part better

[collapse]

yes, there are aspects of this story that will irritate anyone, especially when there's a hundred-plus ch of constant fighting to slog through, or the repetitive escalator fights every. Single. Time. The MC walks into a town/city. The author isn't talented in writing fights so I started skipping from the first page of each fight to the end. It's not a harem, (a plus), but the female lead has little personality and exists mostly to be rescued and as an accessory for the MC. The gun fu was lame and the author seems to have realized and stopped using it, other than the occasional show, after that single arc. And there are some fairly big plot holes that aren't addressed so far. But I quite liked a few of the arcs, like the soul beast forest one, and the good parts help make up for the bad ones. Since I've dropped the last few novels I tried to read by c200 and the highest they've rated was a 2, the fact that I've managed to read over 1000ch means the story is interesting enough.

Spoiler

I love that his soul beast is the one who levels up/ gains exp by killing monsters or people and not the MC. His only game-like ability is his upgrade skill

[collapse]

now about his stalker,

Spoiler

a big wig jr sect leader being that obsessive about some low ranked shmuck made no sense to begin with and to declare him his arch-enemy made the main villain look idiotic and foolish, not scary. All I can think is that he had some kind of love for/crush on the MC and was uncomfortable with his feelings so he decided to focus his entire life on trying to kill the low-level guy.

even the MC is confused and points out that they have no great hatred or anything once he learns who's behind all those assassins and him being set up. At that point, he doesn't even know what sect the guy belongs to or what their plans are. This obsession makes the fact that he keeps losing and running away once the MC gets stronger something funny, which I don't think the author intended. Yeah the MC hates him now but he brought it on himself by constantly seeking him out and causing problems. If he'd never bothered I doubt the MC would even remember his name by now.

[collapse]

so far I want to rate this at a 3.5, but the editing is terrible with mixed-up tenses, strange sentence structure and word mix-ups like 'memories' instead of 'methods' or the like. I actually counted more than a dozen misplaced words in just one chapter and it happens in just about all of them. In the end, I'm giving it a 3 for now.

Interesting concept but very poor writing. The MC is smart at times and then he'll do the most s*upidest thing. He's illogical in hiding his upgrade system from his most trusted people even when he leaves all sorts of clues here and there. He may have been naive due to his humble beginning, but now that he's been in 'Jianghu' for a while now, his s*upidity has no excuses!

The latest arc is just so forced, it is really terrible. If you go to help your fellow disciples who are outnumbered,... more>> do you go guns blazing or keep holding back and playing around until someone gets hurt!?

Hate the FL, she's so weak, but still insists on doing things her way. The latest arc and FL being hurt was just there to force the feelings between MC and FL. So far, half the chaps have been devoted to MC saving her and other hanger-ons from this or that.

Dropping this novel... <<less

For those who don't want to read long explanation Ill clear things up quick. Basically as said a gamer transmigrates over with an upgrade technique from a game he played well when he does planar laws are not happy so they kill him and what little remains enters and mutates the soul of Bai Yunfei. From then on he sets to change his life with a newfound power after a few accidents and deaths, it follows him and unlike normal novels, the upgrade system does help but its not the... more>> main contributing factor for his increasing strength. And those plot armor people well he does have them but they are well integrated with the story making it seem much more possible for those moments of protection to be real and they use his past as a basis of his strong unflinching will to get him through the tough times. <<less
