The novel so far is a solid 4.5/5 for me. Most novel of this kind invoke little sense of danger and little risk will actually happen that will effect the main cast of character life due to the author writing style, we always feel that the MC can tell when the danger would happen and taken step to avoid it.

The novel is a blend between normal late medieval/musket era with fantasy element like people out running horses and dodging bullet but those are "rare" in a sense that beside the... more>> 10 or so char, the rest are just normal people. The politics is handle while not very dark and bloody but still realistic in a sense that every action lead to result and every characters in the novel behave in a believable way and while the poor foot soldiers are still the first to die in a fight, they behave as human. It might sound odd but there are novels that treat soldiers as nothing but plot device. They fight, die and do stuff that in reality, no soldiers or army could do while still be operating normally. Imagine you are a veteran captain of a unit and has been leading those guy for 5 or so years. The guys in the unit will gladly follow your command with little to no hesitation even if its charging into rifle line. You then got transfer into another unit in a different army. Those guy will know that you are a veteran but they won't be charging into rifle line unless you got a good explanation on what are you trying to do.

The romance in short is non-existence. In full is a god damn tease fes. The author tease us with the MC and almost every girl he met along the way. While most of the tease girl aren't worth mentioning and their tease intention could be felt be the reader, the main romance target keep getting tease over and over. For me, some how, it does not get on my nerve yet so I can still tolerate to it. But on the bright side.

Spoiler

One of the girl flat out say "I like you" in the vol 12 so expect some development in the future

[collapse]

A solid novel, not every character is out right evil and worth the hate. The MC is a book nerd and weaker than a woman but he got something similar to "perfect memory" and can cite strategy from book like nobody business but his confident in himself is lower than an earthworm.

Spoiler

He believe that no women on earth would want to date him and in a sense, he is not wrong. If the princess, Altina hasn't discover his talent, he would be marrying books and die in random street corner or in a house made of books in the future. Most girls so far interested in him on few thing: he respect women due to being raise up by his sister (the novel set in the late medieval ages so don't expect women rights and respect to be the same as ours), his achievement so far and being the princess trusted aid.

[collapse]

The main ship with the MC is the princess Altina but don't expect him to lay his hand on the princess any time soon. Unless he wanted his head chop off and his family fined/killed for "desecrating a royal body" or similar things anyway. <<less

This is one of the best novel around, not only is it about War and Strategies, the author likes to show the enemy's PoV to show how devastating and unexpected the MC pulls it off. This also lets you ride along story the emotionally.

I've read all 14 volumes so far. Overall a very enjoyable LN series.

This is historical fantasy/alternative history, the only fantastical element is that people with royal blood like Altina and her brothers have super strength/reaction time (which is why she can swing her huge sword around), everything else is realistic, there is no magic, etc.

There are many female characters but not all are interested in Regis and even those who may be they respect his talents but also are a bit cautious because of his shortcomings, so it is not... more>> a "true" harem where all the heroines are in love with MC.

The good:

-Many battles which are written very well. If you want war, this series has it covered.

-Many characters with their own stories - whole chapters dedicated to exploits of other characters besides Regis, so you are not limited only to Regis' POV.

The bad:

MC gets annoying - for 14 volumes he does exact same thing - "oh, I am worthless, I only win the battles because I get strategies from books that I read, otherwise I am nobody, I just want to read my books." It's kinda sad when the MC gets the least development of all the characters. Now you may say - wow why would you read so many books with MC that his so annoying - the answer is because other characters get good development so you do not have to deal with the MC all the time. Also, as I said, the overall story, the battles and politics are very entertaining.

Without spoiling, I think that with what's happening in the latest story arc, hopefully the author will finally start developing MC since logically he is now at the point where he will have to deal with his issues in order to deal with the problem at hand. If the author just hits the reset button after solving the current problem then it will be disappointing. <<less

Interesting.

The characters are quite interesting, they have different personalities and I like that.

The battles are quite detailed, I like the strategies and the forms of battle.

The personalities of the main characters are very good and I like them a lot.

The main thing is the development of the characters, after a while they don't make the same mistakes as in other stories and I love that.

That's why I recommend it and it deserves 5 stars.

Regis is seriously OP. Nothing else needs to be said. REGIS. IS. OP.

Honestly, I'm rooting for Regis and Altina but I really like their relationship of commander and strategist as well. Ah~ so conflicted!!! There's also the fact that the class difference isn't easy to overcome. Not to mention that princesses can't exactly marry whoever they wish. Plus, they're also used as political pieces for establishing connections with other countries through marriage..... sigh.

The plot and the characters are fairly well-rounded and believable if not 100% realistic to medieval warfare. The main cast is likable. I particularly like the MC, who actually uses strategy and intellect. The author seems capable of designing appropriately complex scenarios with which to challenge the cast. This isn't a case where we're simply told that the MC is smart, and other characters are made unrealistically dumb in order to make the MC seem so by way of contrast. The author actually shows the MC's prowess through the MC's... more>> actions and interactions with the storyline's competent antagonistic forces, both animate and inanimate. <<less

(I'm not really good at English, so forgive me if there's anything wrong with my grammar)

In my opinion, this is a great novel. In fact, this currently stands as the best novel I have read so far.

It's a novel about sword, strategies, politics, wars and etc. We all know from the description that the MC is physically weak and if you're looking to find a MC that gradually gets stronger, well this isn't the Novel for you since the MC has barely any physical strength, even in the... more>> latest chapter. So this is when the MC's brilliant strategies which he got reference from the books he read plays.

Every character here is very interesting, and all of them gets to have a decent amount of screen time for us to see their personalities and how they develop throughout the story, mostly for the MC (if you read this novel until the latest chapter, you'll know what I'm talking about).

For the setting of the story, it's obvious that it is set on the medieval period. But what makes this novel more interesting is we actually see the world develop, to be frank, we see how civilization grows with all the inventions which is all pretty much based on real life inventions during the medieval age. (Again, if you read the novel you'll know what I'm talking about)

Overall in my opinion, this is a really really great novel. I don't even know why this isn't a famous novel yet. Great story, great development of the characters, and top quality translation from skythewood! Anyways i'd love to see this adapted as a manga or even better, an anime. <<less

Altina the sword princess is a low fantasy novel set in Medieval Not-Europe. The titular Altina is the royal princess of French Empire, a country perpetually at war with everyone else: the Kingdom of Belgium to the north, German Confederacy and Kingdom of Italia to the east, Kingdom of Hispania to the south, and Great Britain across the sea. The names change in the novel but when the in-universe map is literally just Western Europe with odd protrusions north of Spain it's far easier to just think of it in... more>> medieval europe term.

The timeline is near the start of Industrial Revolution, where Great Britain invented steam engines, but before they developed the mighty Dreadnought class ironclad ships.

The story revolves around Altina the princess and Regis Aurick her strategist, in a quest to seize the imperial throne so she can establish a peaceful empire. In essence, this is Romance of Three Kingdoms with Altina as Liu Bei and Regis as Zhuge Liang. Regis employs brilliant strategies against seemingly invincible enemies and helps Altina to tread the den of lions called politics

It's honestly a great read

Altina's problem is the fact that it's too grounded in reality, that the things it doesn't match with is kind of bothersome

In Altina, they've developed matchlocks, and Great Britain eventually developed rifles, yet the armies of the world do not employ matchlock arquebusiers, battles being fought with swords, spears, and lances instead.

Let's pivot back to Sengoku era Japan. Takeda Shingen invented cavalry charge, the fearless Takeda cavalry will charge at the enemy disregarding their spears, breaking enemy morale in one devastating charge while their infantry mops up the demoralized enemies. This was an amazingly effective tactic that brought Takeda clan to the spotlight

About 30 years later, Oda Nobunaga destroyed this fearsome Takeda charge by using matchlock arquebusiers. The loud, thunderous sound scared horses, preventing them from charging, and for those who do keep charging, samurai armor were no match for arquebus ammo. The legendary Takeda charge was eliminated within one generation, all thanks to the mighty matchlock

Let's get back to Altina: they have matchlocks, but basically don't use them in combat. Matchlock was so important that it revolutionized warfare, yet it was relegated to support equipment: the French army did not have matchlock squads doing their war, relying instead on lance cavalry and sword infantry.

A little while later, Great Britain invented rifles, that's when sh*t hits the fan and French army (including Regis) finally remembered they have matchlocks and employed caballero tactics. It's super weird, because a lot of things can be solved with firearms

Leaving that aside, the one baffling thing about Regis is that literally each and every single one of his strategies, from battlefield tactics to siege warfare, comes from novels that he read. This is justified by claiming that since France had been at war for centuries, the nobles are well-versed in warfare and those very same nobles wrote a lot of novels with detailed war tactics in them. This is baffling, since in fiction people act unrealistically in order to make even the simplest plans work, thus they're rarely - if at all - applicable to "real world" so to speak.

It's weird, there's no reason to do that. Instead of claiming that Regis' tactics come from romantic comedy novels (they actually did that), Regis could've learned psycology and Art of War or some such, granting him actual ingenuity rather than a pitiful excuse of "Here's a tactic I found from Romeo and Juliet" <<less
