EDIT note near the bottom ?

The story is quite better than a lot of other xianxia and it isn’t s*upid (maybe a little boring). There is a lot of mystery around his past and it isn’t just like let’s dump everything on the reader (wdqk). The romance is slow and he only loves one girl who he already had a relationship with before but didn’t meet again til chapter 142. Mu Chen has an extremely likable character. He is actually smart and knows his limits. Not extremely arrogant (he’s handsome... more>> though *winks) and he isn’t a flat out jerk. It might be a typical xianxia novel to a lot of people, but hey, it is xianxia.

Yes it's slow, but I actually understand the concepts in this novel compared to a lot of fast paced ‘I want to get stronger because of insane luck’ novels.

The sweet thing that’s between Mu Chen and Luo Lu is so cute. It makes my heart flutter because it isn’t all pe*verted or rated r. Seriously the romance makes sense in this. It wasn’t just put a random pretty girl in it and make a romance based on lust (mga).

I know it might be slow but it pays out because there are less plot holes. And what a lot of people think are plot holes are supposed to be explained as time goes on. The author is not just going to dump everything on you like a lot of other xianxia. This keeps the mystery factor and it keeps the story going. I can’t stand how other xianxia stories go and reveal everything. No great back story. You know everything within a few pages and what you don’t know is a pothole or it isn’t mentioned once in a couple tens or hundred chapters.

Hope you read and don’t mind my extremely long review. (Right as of chapter 164)

EDIT ????????

OKAY. I'm starting to understand the irritation with the slowness and lack of development, but I'm gonna stand strong on my views. I like it. And everyone has a right to their own opinion. (just try not to ruin it for others) <<less

For someone who has supposedly been through multiple life and death battles and is supposed to be ruthless, he has a habit of always letting the actually meaningful enemies go when he has ample opportunity to kill them while only being ruthless against nameless mooks.

When it happens so many times in succession, it starts getting very annoying since the author can't seem to make up his mind and says the character is one way when he always does the opposite but don't worry blatant plot armour will always save the... more>> day. <<less

Very similar to BTTH so far. Shares the same sort of decent aspect, which is an interesting cultivation method. However shares the same huge pitfall: everyone in the story is a special kind of dumb.

Makes it almost a chore to read, just like BTTH. Only read these stories after you've read all the other good stuff.

When a character can do everything and I mean everything like medicine, martial arts, formations, anything you can think of. So much that even his father asks his opinion before doing something. The story becomes stale.

The character is going to beat everyone because he is just that talented. Everything can be done with talent. It rubs of me the wrong way because talent in the story is not from hard work but from his blood. Reminds me of old nobles, who were obsessed with bloodlines. A class society, a caste... more>> system. <<less

The name of this novel should really be "The Great Plot Armor." This story is 2 Stars for me.

Every story starts at 5 stars for me and I take 1 star off for every seriously bad aspect that I dislike about it.

-1 star for the annoying repetitive descriptions to pad the word count. I don't need to be told how pretty a women is 30, 000 times in several different ways.

-1 star for the s*upid decisions the MC makes. Let me activate this super powerful and super dangerous thing that... more>> can instantly kill someone way stronger then me, but I will survive with only light injuries because "reasons."

-1 star for the terrible plot armor. I have this super powerful art. 50 chapters later. I can't train in this art without 3 super rare spiritual treasures which I can't find. Within 30 chapters he finds a clue for 1 of the treasures... Seriously?! I thought these where super rare! I'm fighting someone way stronger then me but I will win because "reasons."

Seriously considering taking off another star because the school arcs just keep going... I'm dropping this, good luck author. I really hope your writing improves in the future. <<less

I want to like this, but it's just unbearable. There's no end to the misery that is little heads, little hands, slender legs, and weak and lovable figures. I want to throw up, this turbovirg*n can't write about any of the females that are friendly to the MC without using one of those descriptions. The entire novel is like a stale end piece of white bread. At some point it was bland, but edible, but it's just too far gone.

Aside from that, it's like a morning shonen where nobody dies,... more>> but everyone is cruel and bloodthirsty. The story itself is really uninspired, and there is barely any world building. Just as well, because the little that exists doesn't matter. People will act to enable the MC instead of their own agenda, no matter their responsibilities. <<less

Boring, boring, wait did I mention boring?

Start is promising, you want to know what happened, why he was forced out of that special place, how strong he really is etc.

But the author managed to turn this great idea, which btw. Is quite unique, into a really slow paced and boring story. The MC, who should be 5x as strong as his classmates, keeps for many chapters running into lowly, dumb **** idiots that keep harassing him for whatever ever. Nothing really important happens, no real adventures, no real romance, nothing... more>> that really makes the plot progress. It’s like a slice of life novel, just with a shitty story <<less

Starts off with MC having fame for participating in some special area with other geniuses. Our MC is the son of a territory lord so we don't have the starting from the bottom with nothing theme or some type of useless young master in a clan theme. All students work towards joining one of the Five Great Academies of the continent.

The translation and editing is great, normal for WW. The only problem is with the novel itself where the plot keeps repeating. They join some type of tournament, MC offends... more>> people, explore hidden location for competition. They join another tournament, offend everyone, explore some more hidden location of said tournament. Rinse and repeat. It gets to the point that I start skimming because it's just the same scenario with different side characters and items to power up. There's always enemies slightly stronger than MC so he will increase his cultivation during that tournament with lucky item grab and then steamroll over them. Opponents will keep calling MC tr*sh, random spectators will always be shocked about his strength even though news of MC beating XXX who is super strong has already been spread everywhere. I find that the people of the world refuse to believe what they hear, all the time. Every few chapters, there'll be an item or special move that will make the spectators gasp in shock. I feel sorry for the inhabitants of this world since they are constantly shocked all day long.

We, as readers are constantly reminded YYY girl has a cute mouth because every time the girl speaks, she opens her "cute" mouth. ZZZ girl has a slim waist because she is described as so and the MC uses some random excuse of whisking her away from an attack to embrace said slim waist.

The weirdest issue that I have with, and most likely everyone has ignored, is that the so called academy our MC joins doesn't have classes! They just do missions, get points, and exchange for stuff to level up with said points. An academy with no classes? Is that still even an academy? Anyway, that's just my pet peeve nagging at me, hehe. <<less

TLDR; The novel had potential but plagued with inconsistencies and loopy settings. If you wished for an epic combination with 2 previous novels, WDQK & BTTH, be prepared to be disappointed. It's not epic, just decent and under delivered.

This novel had tons of potential, HAD. The novel is rushed. The author didn't even bother to write a decent plot but just put 'Get a treasure/skill' and 'Another skill upgraded/mastered' in the before/middle of a fight. BTTH and WDQK had a better storytelling than that. The author tried to create an... more>> interesting MC but he failed so bad due to his writing. Inconsistencies can be seen all over the places. Some of the 'oh-so-hyped' antagonists actually has shallow reasoning, even minor antagonist has more interesting reason than them. If you have read around the first 300 chapters, later on, you can see the pattern being looped over and over again.

Some of the things that pissed me off and wished it was better.
Spoiler

1. When MC met Lin Dong's daughter, she mentioned 'Uncle Tiger' but never ever appeared in the whole novel. Only the other brother appeared (If you have read WDQK)

2. Author mentioned only some of the previous novels children but only 2 of them appeared. Which one appeared? Can you guess it? Yes, the girls. The author could've made an interesting story with that and didn't. An awesome material was wasted.

3. Only mentioning the conclusion of why previous 2 novels MC became famous in this novel. Man, I kinda wish to read the detailed version instead of the time-wasting looped pattern

4. Nine Nether had a bloodline link with MC! Life and death of 2 person matters for each other but there is no conclusion in that relationship. The author just made it that MC helped Nine nether getting the ancient beast and the relationship doesn't need any further development. Previous 2 novels' MC had 2 wives. The author planned the same for this but didn't deliver.

One of my fav xianxia ever. Great storyline, characters, mysterious past, conflict, and NO harem. So glad this isn't a harem story because I don't feel like reading harem now.

Mu Chen is powerful but it didn't come without hard work. Sure, he got lucky encounters too, especially with the nine nether bird, but it's his mysterious ability and strong determination that saves him. Meanwhile Luo Li is one with a great burden but also strong determination to stand with Mu Chen. Her problem is also what drove Mu Chen to... more>> strove higher (that and his mother's problem).

It's been a long time since I've last read this. But it still remains one of my favorite. Don't judge it boring so fast because the boring part isn't there yet in the english translation. I recommend you to at least preserve until the end of the academy arc because it's just the beginning of his journey in the real world. You can even find the characters from BTTH and WDQK later in the story. If you feel that the TL is so slow, you can try lnmtl. Sure, it's bad and confusing but at least you can move forward faster than the TL updates came in. And after so long reading, you'll get used to the weird wording. <<less

I have started reading it and the initially story telling is horrible. No time to setup why he is "talented" or why he was "accepted" or even "kicked out". Its just a huge mystery. The random appearances of people with very little backstory, and just the sentence "they are close" or "they are friendly with each other" would satisfy as an explanation with 0 build up of any backstory. Then there is also the random parts where the author starts explaining something yet abruptly stops. And finally, the antagonists keeps... more>> saying he should keep a "low profile" which is apparently why they keep harassing him then chapter 16 says he has always been keeping a "low profile". I dont know if this is the author or just the translator that messed up but its quite annoying. Compared to other novels, it doesnt have that quality story telling that gets you hooked after the first few chapters. It feels like a grind just to get to the good parts of it. Note, these are just my first impression of the novel <<less

I like to see TGR as the story where the author reveals all he had learned from writing BTTH and WDQK. WDQK is a mess of overpowered MC and unbalanced battles, while BTTH is overly descriptive, a style that is usually alright, but not that good for Webnovels.

With TGR, the author balances the writing, characters, power increases, and fights to make a story far more enjoyable than the two previous works.

The worse part is that the character is supposed to be absolutely ruthless based on his past experience (s). However, all you ever see him do is letting each person go for no apparent reason (or nonsensical consequences). You see the same enemies repeating over and over because the protagonist refuses to kill/cripple them.

I have finished reading up to about 538 but I cannot push myself to go on any further. The initial chapters are good and definitely worth reading up to the beginning of the grand tournament of the... more>> five academies (approx late 400s) <<less

Well, it is enjoyable tr*sh at times-just like btth and wdqk. The same routine repeated over and over. Damn, it is really hard to care for any of the characters in this novel, even the MC (the living and breathing plot armor) with his bloody absurd luck. In transcending the nine heavens, the mc's luck is atleast explained by him possessing the nine tribulations sword. Here none of that shit. The MC mentions he needs some super-rare-out-of-the-world herb or whatever and in the next few chapters he 'coincidentally' finds it.

well... more>> as I said its enjoyable tr*sh like any third-rate xianxia.

well, I don't expect grasping evil or Ergen level xianxia everywhere but why don't these authors put a little more effort. Man aren't they earning money through this? So why f*cking not? <<less

TGR starts off with an interesting concept that makes you want to know what happened to the main character. In my opinion, the hype sadly wasn't worth the wait in finding out. Despite this, the main character isn't a scumlord and doesn't somehow attract every person in existence.

Sadly, TGR does a lot of things decently, but nothing really stands out, which would normally make me give a series 4 stars. The reason I'm giving it 3 stars instead is because the foreshadowing is just awful. Foreshadowing is a great tool... more>> for a author to build some hype for the characters, but this series will literally tell you exactly what's going to happen before it happens! For instance, main character found x, main character is now at a bottleneck and can't comprehend x, suddenly main character needs a solution. That thing he found 20 chapters ago, x, is the solution! This happens quite frequently and just ruined the story for me. <<less

The story is okay I guess, but I just can't make it through the overloading shit-ton of filler. Same problem I've had with every novel by this author. He just rambles on way too much. There is no sense to be had in the "cultivation, " yet he constantly tries to talk about it, which basically ends up being word puke where he describes some random fantasy image. His fight scenes are mostly word puke as well. He uses almost every move the character has ever had, to fight to... more>> a standstill with every move being blocked for no reason except that the opponent was powerful, then the opponent suddenly isn't powerful anymore and gets hit. Mixed in all that, he constantly goes on about how vicious and ruthless Mu Chen is with each move, which are rarely vicious or ruthless in any way except the fact that he got paid according to his word count. Lots of shouting about killing people, but he almost never does it. It's part of the word puke.

I'm also annoyed by the fact that this isn't supposed to be a harem, but almost every girl in the series is smitten by Mu Chen. And, the only thing he doesn't have the balls to do, is admit to his relationship when those girls ask him if Luo Li is his woman. <<less

After BBTH and WDQK, you'd think the author would be a better writer, but nope. Still the same poorly written novel. I'll finish it since I finished those two, but the writing is horrible. I'm at c384 and every women that's mentioned has to be prefaced with beautiful, exquitside, slender, sexy, curvy, etc. Unbelievable! Everytime he mentions Luo Li he has to say how pretty she is. Actually, the writing is tr*sh. I'll say that straight out. At the conclusion of every major fight, some stronger figure will appear to... more>> rescue the weaker side. Skim read it and ignore everything except dialogue and some of the basic action and you'll get through quickly without wanting to drop it. <<less

Quick review:

Interesting Start, but repetitive plot.

MC supposedly gets kicked out a training early than others. But the MC get a lot for powerups and Secrets than his adversaries, and still he is looked down.

But even so, old enemies are supposed stronger because they complete the s*upid training, this doesn't make sense AT ALL! Also the whole "Ji Xuan" thing pisses me off! People talking things like:

Spoiler

"However, you being able to train your physique to such a degree have exceeded my expectations. However, I'm very sorry to inform you that there's still quite a big disparity between you and Ji Xuan!"

[collapse]

This is a common trend. that guy was MC's bit*h during that time of training, and supposedly he got more fortuitous encounters, more training, more Shit. More MC level powers than the real MC itself... WTF!!!

Why all the others who participated and weren't kicked like MC got as strong as him? BULLsh*t AUTHOR... BULLSHIT!

Longer Resume (About Author's Plot) :

Author likes to vagaries the plot, too much talk, even during fights too much talk, Author keeps MC always on a power level below enemies, doesn't matter how many things MC gets. he is always below, so everyone looked down on him and then BOOOM! he wins.

This repeats Over and OVER, the whole novel.

The novel has 1500 (and some) chapters, and by chapter 1200 the MC still have no idea about his main goal, his lover's issue, his mother's issue. he forgets his father, he left the academy as a high level array master and didnt go to his clan and create one for them so they can cultivate faster, 1200 chapters and his level is far low beyond common powerhouse.

Wanna know what Author does? yes you guess it right... RUSH IT! Author keep nerfing and running in circles for 80% of the novel, then on the last stretch of the Novel, Author decides to "f*ck it lets make MC OP faster, I want to end this" and then he rush it all.

With the Pace the Novel had the first 90%, this book would have 3800 chapters. But it seems that the Author meet the requires quota to sell it, and then rush it, to go for a new book. is what Most Chinese author do.

Was a pain finishing this thing, had to skim great part of repetitive plot. I give this novel a 2* STAR as base, and then will give 3* due to BTH and WDQK characters appearing. <<less

Of the three novels of this author this is by far the worst (BTTH WQDK TGR).

The main character is weak, he is labeled as Blood Calamity, but dont by fooled like the rest of us, after THAT event he cant or wont kill anyone anymore.

The first arc is good, but the middle ones are boring, the novel should have died but it was saved because the mention of Xiao Yan and Lin Dong and the interaction of Mu Chen with theirs daughers. The last 300 chapters are better but at... more>> least for me I didnt like how it end. <<less

This novel gets very repetitive. MC does something that offends random dime a dozen villain, villain is 1-2 cultivation levels above MC and the MC defeats villain then cultivates up one more level then another villain 1-2 cultivation levels above MC appears and gets beat and process starts over again for 100% of the novel. Some random female character shows up becomes friendly with MC over and over and over again. MC needs to enter a hidden realm that is limited to younger generation over and over again so every... more>> hidden realm has this restriction. MC is always behind in cultivation strength of his generation even though he keeps passing those around him over and over again yet a new same generation pops up that is ahead of him and yet they keep saying he has a very fast unmatched speed cultivating

pretty much PMG with a better plot. <<less
